I added the MCFG_FLOPPY_DRIVE_SOUND(true) to src/bus/a2bus/a2diskiing.cpp and now I'm hearing drive sounds (at least the motor running anyway) if I turn the slider volume all the way to 2.0 (Can I turn it up to 11?)

There's something cool about hearing a motor sound.

MACHINE_CONFIG_MEMBER( a2bus_diskiing_device::device_add_mconfig )
MCFG_DEVICE_ADD(WOZFDC_TAG, DISKII_FDC, 1021800*2)
MCFG_FLOPPY_DRIVE_ADD("0", a2_floppies, "525", a2bus_diskiing_device::floppy_formats)
MCFG_FLOPPY_DRIVE_SOUND(true)
MCFG_FLOPPY_DRIVE_ADD("1", a2_floppies, "525", a2bus_diskiing_device::floppy_formats)
MCFG_FLOPPY_DRIVE_SOUND(true)
MACHINE_CONFIG_END

One day it'd be awesome to sound like this:

I still intend (if I find enough time) to design an Arduino-based device that creates the various floppy sounds for any attached device. Eventually we should have something like a sound library for different floppy devices which can be chosen by the user. Or alternatively, a comprehensive set of floppy drive types from which to select, with the proper sound lib.

The behavior of Apple II drive somehow reminds me of the C1541 which pulls back the head beyond limits, causing a harsh hammering sound.

BTW, you're aware that creating music from physical devices, and then emulating those devices to yield the same sound, is a ... real challenge? :-)

If you add the lines above to the disk ii, you can do this beagle brothers poke to hear the drive motor sound under Apple II DOS 3.3.

POKE 49384,0 stops drive motor
POKE 49385,0 starts drive motor
