I get a linking error bulding 0.187 on Ubuntu 16.04 x64 wit gcc 6.3.0:

The arcade and mess subargets are not fully supported - if it breaks, you get to keep the pieces. It's possible to build the arcade subtarget on current master, but there may be other issues from big changes that were merged for the beginning of the cycle.

You need to manually apply this patch:

https://git.redump.net/mame/commit/?id=f31efbf4d0a9e130c40e6d23c0bb0b109317d29a

then your compile will work.

It's getting important to note that if you build the arcade subtarget you're missing about 2/3rds of the whatsnew, and therefore not actually following MAME's progress in a meaningful way.
