I am trying to run the "pcdos33de" software with the IBM XT 5160 device. This works fine with the "default configuration" of the "Devices" tab.

What I need is an alternate configuration, with EGA as the graphics card, and a hard disk mounted. I set this one up, leaving the two floppy slots empty. I save it as a custom configuration.
This configuration works fine stand alone, booting from the hard disk.

When I switch back to the software list, and change to my custom configuration, then the two floppies show "No mount device". Switching back to "Default configuration" immediately shows e.g. flop1 as "Mounted on: flop1".

It appears as if the software list only works with the default configuration, which seems a bit limiting.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Unlike on 1990s and 2000s PCs, the floppy controller on those was an actual card, so you need to be careful not to replace it.

In particular, ibm5160's default configuration is:

isa1 - CGA graphics
isa2 - COM ports
isa3 - floppy disks
isa4 - XT harddisk
isa5, isa6, isa7, and isa8 are available for other cards.

So in your case you'd want to replace isa1 with the EGA card and leave isa2, 3, and 4 alone.

Slots / slot-options cannot be customized at the moment, that's due to earlier changes in MAME related to "-listxml", and QMC2 currently has no support for that. So at the moment you can't do what you want through QMC2, but it will change in one of the next versions. It's high on my todo list.

Thank you! This is what I have done. I find the whole setup to be quite intuitive: First I add the controller to the ISA slot, and then I can add the floppy images to the floppies.
What seems to not work is to remove the hard disk controller. I realize that an XT always came with the controller installed, but it was still possible to remove it. The machine would still work fine with only floppies. But apparently "default" devices can't be removed. It looks like this feature comes from MAME, not from qmc2.

Great! Thanks for the explanation.

You can remove default slot devices, e.g.
Code
mame intlc440 -j7 ""

to unplug the imm4_90 high-speed paper tape reader plugged into that slot by default. Substitute the driver name and slot name as required.

Strange: When I remove the adapter from isa4 and then launch the emulator from qmc2, it crashes with
Code
emulator #3 finished, exit code = 3 (fatal error), exit status = normal, remaining emulators = 0

When I then copy/paste the generated command line from the Front end log window into Terminal/bash, the emulator starts. Part of the command is indeed -isa4="".
There is a message on the Terminal that I don't understand:
Code
mame64[39862:6266273] ApplePersistenceIgnoreState: Existing state will not be touched. New state will be written to (null)

It appears that default devices can be removed from a MAME point of view, but something goes wrong when this is done through qmc2.

The reason is likely the same not-yet-supported stuff... even if the command from the log works, it doesn't mean that QMC2 is passing the quotation marks correctly when it does it "internally". When the emulator crashes in this case, that's a good sign of QMC2 doing it wrong. Well, I'm not saying it works at the moment wink. Don't bang your head for things that need to be redone anyway!
