Hi guys!

I found a Gakken Mini Backgammon LCD lying around at my parent's place and I thought it may be of interest.

I've uploaded a zip file with nice scans here.

There's a youtube video of the game in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg2iaZtQDpU

Needless to say that I'll send it for dumping or decapping should it be necessary.

Just pasting my comments here

The Radica SSX game appear to have the Xavix logo on startup, which would probably make that one the same hardware as Taito Nostalgia if it gets dumped (heavily customised 6502 core with extended opcodes) Peter was going to probe some of the Taito Nostalgia hardware with me at some point to try and figure that one out. You can tell these ones are a step up presentation-wise from the ones I've been looking at.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwUrUloL7FY

also that LCD Tetris game Radica also did, the one with the big screen, people on ebay want £200+ for it(!) There's a smaller one that's still relatively cheap, but who knows if it's the same code.

Looking at the videos of the Jakks ones, they're way more complex than anything here video-wise (even moreso than the Xavix ones) they look somewhere between GBA and DS but with TV resolutions and the arcade ports on them look basically perfect, could even be emulation based.

Btw I think the Radica Skateboarding might be the same hardware as the 6502 ones, looks about the same quality as Tetris / Golden Tee / Space Invaders

Some of the Radica PlayTV games might be similar, Huntin'3, Baseball etc. it's difficult to tell because I can't find any videos of them from power-on to gameplay, only clips of people playing, but again they look similar quality, similar video feature set etc. (basically a single layer + sprites, 256 colours at most, 256x256 resolutions, generally slow paced)

Haven't found any videos of the Radica Cricket game, but based on auction pictures it looks similar..

It looks like some of the Radica PlayTV ones actually have 'powered by XaviX' on the box, which is helpful
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-In-Box-Radica-Play-TV-Interactive-Soccer-Video-Game-2002-XaviX-Technology/273000432652?epid=1737767787&hash=item3f9018040c:g:hSAAAOSw~y9ZCku5
that would put them in the same category as SSX / Taito Nostalgia too (ie more difficult to emulate)

There is also an infamous lcd handheld called Laden vs USA ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laden_VS_USA), this sells for over 100 dollars but is however the exact same game as submarine invasion on the far far cheaper popstation range. I bought Radica Golden Tee and Skateboarder. I'll let you know what's inside.

When you are certain the dump for Space Invaders or Tetris is complete, I'll deglob the ROM. The pinout matches Micron M29F800F (other than the flash-related pins, which are N/C). I'll check the new games to make sure they don't have any additional address pin connections.

Elan has some tech info online, but I can't find anything about the chip used in SI and Tetris. http://www.emc.com.tw/eng/tech_8bit.asp

With leftover pledge funds, I picked up Elektronika's "Space Bridge", and Inflight Trade Services' (WTF?) "Plane Crazy":

I was wondering, how is MAME going to handle games that demand both a background and a frame with gameplay-relevant info, such as Crazy Bee, or games where the frame actually extends the background like Hop Monster?

Will both elements just have to be merged into one image?

EDIT: Wow, that Plane Crazy handheld looks pretty crazy.

MAME won't need any changes for that. You'd have a screen with overlay, and a bezel .png with a hole in it for the screen.

Hey Rob! Nice pics. It looks like the MCU is NEC uPD753xx. There's lots of info in the uCOM-75x Family 4-bit CMOS Microcomputer User's Manual Volume II. I don't know if there is a test pin for electronic dumping. There is a PROM version, but I assume this one is mask ROM.

Cool!

I’ll see if I can get anything else to decap and I’ll send it to you.
