Ok, just got MAME & the original Rampage game to play on it. Took me awhile to get it running. Hadn't realized that the emulator needed to read the zipped file, which was the first issue I had.

Then I had trouble STARTING tge game. It would load & then just go into a demo. I adjusted the menu optiona to allow me to add coins & I was then able to start the game but am now facing two NEW issues.

I can't select my player!! I want to play the game as Ralph...he was always my fav character back and n the day when actually played this in the arcade. Secondly, once in the game, the controls are off. I'm trying to adjust the options for an xbox 360 controller?
Any help is much appreciated.

MAME works best when it finds what is needed in a simple (compressed) folder. .zip or .7z containers work fine when placed in ROMS folder.

Using TAB will allow you to bring up input menus among other things. You'll want the "Input (this machine)" option to view your assignments.

The original Rampage game did not have selectable characters. The control panel housed 3 players, each one controlling a unique creature. In this case, you have (from left to right) George - Lizzie - Ralph! controls. Given the way inputs work, player 1 (which is your default use player) would use George, player 2 using Lizzie and lastly, player 3 would have access to Ralph!. Your controller is set up to use George (player 1) from the start and an xbox 360 controller should work fine by default. If you must use a joystick (the keyboard has mappings to allow you to use that for Ralph! by default), you'd need to change your input mapping to use your controller as Player 3 by adjusting the movement and action buttons to your stick. At the same time, unless you want a mirror George doing the same movement, you'll need to unmap/clear the mapping for Player 1.

Here is a control panel picture to illustrate the issue. Notice the footprints represent the creature you control at each location.

But you COULD choose your character in the original arcade game, ( just didn't have a character select screen) and in the ios import I have on my cellphone, of the original game (midway arcade) allows for you to choose Ralph so I don't understand why he can't be chosen as is. Though having said that not sure I'm understanding what you are saying regarding mapping the keys for player 3 as did tey that but didn't seem to work well.

I had issues with mapping bo matter which player/controller was using. I brought up the menu & was trying to click the button on the controller.

MAME runs the original arcade code, just the same as the original arcade machine.

You 'chose' your character on the original arcade by walking up to and using the controls that were for that character.

You do exactly the same in MAME. If you use the Player 1 controls you get the Player 1 character, if you use the Player 2 controls you get the Player 2 character.

Comparisons to IOS ports are irrelevant.

You're failing to understand how emulation works if you think otherwise.

While some Konami games had alt versions for 2 player conversion cabinets where you did get a normal character select screen there was no such cabinet type for Rampage which Bally Midway only put out as a dedicated 3 player machine.

Mapping should be as simple as selecting your item you wish to change (default with your ARROW keyboard keys), hitting ENTER (default), then pushing the direction or button you want to use for that action having MAME detect the key/button/controller a moment later. If you ESC without entering a key, the entry is cleared/reset. Haze is right, though, as the original arcade game had no character selection even if a port or remake may have included this and as I tried to illustrate, the left/center/right controls each allowed control of a specific creature.

You failed to address the second half of my post...which was the whole point of what U said in the top half...

The part where I said I tried and failed to set the controlker up for player 3....
That would have been mite helpful than a lecture repeating what you already said. Read the whole post please.

I also specifically said had issues with tge controls regardless of WHICH character was being used in the game. Tried using botg the joystick and the D pad

Good luck getting help from anyone if you act like that. Help is not something you're obliged to get.

And you failed to say what you had done to set up player 3 that failed. You also failed to say what issues you were having with the controls. We aren't psychic and we don't have CCTV in your home, so you have to actually describe these issues to get them resolved.

@ Fake Shemp act like WHAT!? My first post was very nicely worded with the issues was having...my second one made one comment in regards to players AND ALSO stating was having control issues regarding all characters and the response rather than help was a lecture. Apologies if that was NOT the intent but that's how it came across.

At this point not being home in front of the computer all I can recall is going into various menu options selecting various control options & pushing corresponding buttons on the controller. Seeing as how can't even get player one to respond to this am REALLY lost when comes to player 3.
