If you love 7zip so much why don't you write up a platform-agnostic version of it and then hook it up to MAME and MESS? Wait, what's that? You say you can't code? Then just let it go. Nobody cares.

Guess what? I can code, unbelievable!! Even a chimpanzee can code, proven!! And I don't need to do it, especially if 7zip is on the path of cross-platform-ism. I have my own projects/priorities and limited free time. You, Sir MooglyGuy, are a sad troll.

except that we'll have to thank mainly that `troll'[1] if we are going to have LLE of the N64 hardware instead of that pile of s**t of per-game configurations & plugins we have at the moment.

he could have a bad attitude many times (and he was MUCH worse once), but it's far from being a troll...

[1] and of course Ville Linde as well, and Nicola Salmoria (for some bugfixing)

EDIT: and he also has a good point there: you're the only one around here who cares so much about 7zip support...

The funny part is all the No-Intro sets I've seen are in fact standard zip - it's one reason I prefer them to Good*, which usually are 7z or rar or whatever the flavor of the month is.

Anyway, the linked post by Aaron more than adequately explained why we aren't supporting random other formats. Case closed.

I never intended to deny the quality of MooglyGuy's work on N64 and I give him props. Tho, if someday 7zip is as portable as zip, I see no reason why it shouldn't replace zip. I don't care if some warez kiddies use 7zip and give it a bad flavor in some people mind. 7zip is free and powerful. That's all that matters to me.

You can get 7zip support in MESS by using a frontend. There's a windows frontend called LusSpace which is actually rather good and has 7zip support out of the tin.

Works well with MESS (even better if you can use a text editor), though there are obvious holes with what systems it supports and it's got outdated dats.

7zip is not cross-platform and it isn't powerful, either. It's very Windows-centric in its features, and also in its code. A powerful cross-platform archiving utility would actually have features for storing metadata required for making a faithful archive of files on a variety of platforms.

Why not just write a 2-second script that extracts the rom to temp space and runs it from there? (I assume that's how that Win front-end does it)

about a couple of years ago someone released a mame version "7zip compatible"; after one week of hipe none seemed to use it.
too few pros, if compared to the cons...
