I'd settle for driving MESS emulating a synth from MESS emulating a computer with a MIDI interface smile

I'd settle for anything, at this point its just cool to see synths emulated in MESS.

I didn't mean emulating both a computer and a synth at the same time.
I meant exposing any available MIDI I/O on the synth itself to the host, as in fully remappable from the MESS UI just like joysticks and computer keyboards. Uh, not sure I'm reading you correctly either. What else is new eh?

Ahh. Well, the synths have plenty of buttons/sliders/knobs on themselves without MIDI that'll need to be assigned too smile

Do you know if performance controls like pitch and modulation wheels typically talk to the rest of the synth via MIDI internally? Or is this different from synth to synth?

What about exotic stuff like the Wavestation joystick, or the breath controller for the DX7?

I'm not asking about this in a MESS context really, just being curious.

Varies from synth to synth. The Ensoniq stuff all has a secondary serial channel that talks to the display, keyboard, and performance controls. I believe for convenience it runs at the MIDI baud rate, but the actual data is nothing like MIDI.

Just for a laugh, tried to install Freehand 5 onto the FM Towns. Installation actually worked perfectly.

But trying to run it after installation and restarting Win95, it just gives this really useful error message:

Whether it's because it's a Japanese version of Windows 95, or it running on something that most certainly isn't a PC, I don't know, but that error tells me nothing. smile

Rev 15266: The S.A.M. ("Software Automatic Mouth") card for the Apple II.

I'll let it speak for itself. Keep in mind it's doing software speech synthesis on a 1 MHz 6502 in realtime while also pushing the output through a non-DMA DAC at a consistent rate. I think it sounds pretty good considering.

That's so cool. I used to hear that demo a lot with the Atari version of S.A.M .. so much so I still know it pretty much by rote.

Does the S.A.M. disk poll for that DAC card and use it if found, and use the 1-bit speaker otherwise? Or was there a special version of the disk meant for dac and 1-bit speaker?
