Somehow I have been using the FM Towns driver for a long time without realizing that the text on the BIOS boot screen didn't make any sense. I took a look at how the video code calculates the font ROM offset and it turned out to be slightly wrong, so it was displaying the wrong kanji. I've sent a PR that fixes it, so now there is real, understandable Japanese text:

Instead of weird gibberish:

It's quite amusing how it only affected kanji, so at a quick glance it *almost* looks like actual text but it's actually pure nonsense.

The games in the micro3d.cpp driver feature a serial monitor port, that is used to output debug messages. I've attached our standard RS232 port to it, this allows you to see the messages:

Start with "mame f15se -monitor terminal" for example.

Next chapter in "FM Towns fixes that are really simple but make things usable": scrolling in 16-color mode. Just shift a couple of bits and...

Unfortunately the gameplay is still broken in Glodia's games... but hey, it's something.

Fixes scrolling in Abel, also. Nice catch.
Still need to fix the colours which are wrong for some reason.

It also makes Dungeon Master playable, which I think makes the X68000 version the only one that doesn't work in MAME. Or at least I'm unable to click the "enter" button on that one.

I think I want to take a look at the keyboard next... lots of unidentified keys there, and I think the kana mode doesn't quite match the layout of an actual Towns keyboard.

I didn't know there were Japanese ports of Dungeon Master. Great, influential game.

If you look at the Towns port of Chase HQ, I was able to fix the palette with partial updates but wasn't able to solve the line scroll problems so I didn't submit the changes.

So apparently, the 16 colour layers each have their own palette. So I've implemented separate palette devices for 256 colour layers, and each of the 16 colour layers. Abel should have correct colours now.

Still need to check/test things, will likely commit it tomorrow.
