I get a black screen with Castlevania, quickly followed by an access violation.

n64 on 32bit builds is still doomed... you might try to disable MIPS DRC (which is the culprit according to Arbee's post above), but maybe then games won't load

No commercial software works at all on 32-bit (well, of the few titles i have). Only a few of the demos. The armchair demo shows running at 100%, but the sound stutters noticeably.

I'm not in any hurry, not going to fiddle with it.

Try disabling the RSP DRC.

I can't seem to get any n64 game working with the latest MESS binaries. Would disabling the RSP DRC help? How do I do this in the code?

With a 32-bit build or a 64-bit build? At the very least, Bust-A-Move 2 and Super Mario 64 worked fine for me before I started pissing around with the video code. They actually ran pretty well on my new machine, too, the former averaging 120-150% depending on how many bubbles were on-screen, and the latter 40-60% depending on geometry load.

If I disable the DRC RSP, n64 games work, but if I enable it, they are busted. This is with a 32-bit build.

they still work fine on 64bit

EDIT: @JD: btw, how much work would be needed to avoid PAL games to crash hard? if it's not too hard, could you put it somewhere in your todo list (otoh, if it would require a lot of efforts, please ignore the request and focus on more important aspects...)

Might be a 32-bit problem as It's not working Here, using svn9824 on winxp sp3 (32-bit)
