Apologies if this question isn't welcome here; I can't see any guidelines though it seems most questions are MESS development-related but I do see the occasional 'how do I' or 'not working' threads... and there is a small chance this is a bug!?!

I cannot for the life of me get the neocdz driver to play a game (or audio tracks for that matter). I've tried ISO and CHD formats, on images that run on other emulators. It loads the images successfully but attempting to start the game from the console GUI does nothing. And for a CHD image of MSLUG with audio tracks, no tracks appear on the CD player.

Are there any known issues with this driver (v151, but nothing in what's new for v152 for neocdz)? Or is it possible I have missed something completely? Getting desperate because I really need the debugger to debug my NGCD homebrew (no other NGCD emulators I've found have debuggers except Raine and that's severely broken)!

As an aside, I'm developing my homebrew for MVS under MAME but it doesn't run on NGCD under NeoCD/SDL or Raine (appears to trash RAM almost immediately). Don't suppose anyone else here has come across this issue before?

neocdz is unmaintained - nothing has been done to break it, but drivers do decay as MESS evolves around them. I don't have any software to test on it, so you're pretty much on your own.

Can anyone else confirm/deny that neocdz (doesn't) work?

Tried Metal Slug 2 which works fine (excellent actually):

I started it from the .cue (contains a .iso and a number of .wav's) for -cdrom.

We're searching for QMC2 translators and support for existing translations. Interested? See here!

Working fine on the MESS 0.152.

Code:
rompath mess-roms;softwarelist\neocd

#
# IMAGE DEVICES
#
cdrom lasthope

Did you run the games off of the neocdz.ini from your ini folder? Make one and then try it out from that folder.

Also use the neocd.xml hash sofewarelist. Probably work better this way rather than trying to load the games without it.

softwarelist\neocd < This where my neocd CHD games are at.

mess-roms < This is where my neocd.zip and neocdz.zip BIOS are at. Don't have it then get it.

The CD Player also works as it should after softlist loading games.

Playtested all 104 chds softlisted by loading and playing various modes for a few moments. With the exception of 2 of the 4 listed as "not supported", all worked OK. NOTE: fatfury3 and fatfury3a are supposed to have a copy protection failure in demo mode, but I could not duplicate it.

Hey guys thanks for the input! I finally got it going in the end, but to be honest, I'm not sure exactly what I was doing wrong before. I was doing it all via the GUI using file manager; tried specifying the iso/chd/cue directly and it didn't work, then tried software list and choosing the game (chd) and it didn't work either.

I added the .ini Dullaron suggested and after mucking about it finally worked.

Ultimately I discovered that 'mess64d neocdz -cdrom <iso/cue/chd>' works from the command line without any of the ini file magic.

The good news is I got my homebrew running perfectly under MESS (after fixing some issues), but the bad news is that it doesn't display properly on real hardware! I guess the MESS driver isn't quite 100% accurate after all! wink

EDIT: It also displays perfectly on NeoCD/SDL and Raine!

Regards,

I don't think anyone claims that MESS NeoCD emulation is perfect, just that it runs most commercial titles, and the sprite chip emulation is pretty good.

My point was that none of the emulators, MESS, NeoCD/SDL or Raine, display the same results as the real hardware!

Perhaps if/when I resolve the issue, I can update the MESS driver (or at least document the issue)!?!

Yeah, we know MESS is not perfect, and any additional test cases with documented correct behaviour would be much appreciated.
