Hello. I've installed MESS for Apple IIe emulation but the romset is not recognized. I've created ~/mess/roms. I've copied a compressed file apple2e.zip in this folder. The content of the zip file is apple2e.rom. I've used this romset on Windows with Apple II Oasis (an emulator) without problems.

When I start MESS I can see the initial screen with the only option: apple2e. But when I select this option I receive a message that some ROM or CHD image is missing.

I've not mounted any software but I've read on the manual "Other systems (e.g. all the computers) would start also without any software mounted". Then, I wait to see the Apple IIe initial screen.

If I start MESS from terminal:

~$ mess apple2e
342-0133-a.chr NOT FOUND
342-0133-a.chr NOT FOUND
342-0135-b.64 NOT FOUND
342-0134-a.64 NOT FOUND
341-0027-a.p5 NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the system cannot be run.

If I verify romset:

~$ mess -verifyroms apple2e
romset "apple2e" not found!

My computer is a ThinkPad G41 with dual booting Windows XP and Debian.

~$ uname -a
Linux Geminis002 3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u3 i686 GNU/Linux

Thanks

I think you have to get the bios rom files for mess, not just using the rom files for other emulators (like AppleII Oasis). You also need some of other device roms such as diskII. Rom bios should be the correct version for the mess you are using.

If apple2e appears in the list that means it is seeing the file at least. However MESS is expecting a ROM dump which is split into multiple files like the real motherboard chips and not a single "apple2e.rom". This should be pretty apparent from the error message which is quoting filenames like "342-0133-a.chr" which you clearly don't have.

You will need ROM zips prepared specifically for use with MESS, and for the appropriate version as the MESS requirements have changed over time. FYI the wording of the error message you quote was modified several versions ago so you are using a pretty out-of-date MESS version.
