As of SVN #210 the Genesis/Megadrive drivers in MESS now use Haze's "new" code, since it's been lurking in the tree but not used for the last few releases. This should catapult compatibility and accuracy right up to the top tier, and SVN #211 adds 6-button controller support as well. Please retest all bugs entered for the Genesis component.

I tested a couple of them and took the freedom to close them.

BTW..."Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers (U) [c][!]" isn't working.

since you're at it, wouldn't sound reasonable to change gen_eur & gen_jap to something better?
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 01:21 AM
Sure. "megadriv" and "megadrij" you think? And the US should be "genesis".
Posted By: etabeta78 Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 01:36 AM
good! for japanese one, megadrij or mgadrivj... not that it's that important as long as it's no more gen_jap wink
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 01:58 AM
Ok, in #212 the names are changed and the SSF2 mapper is supported.

A few carts cause crashes or don't load. Only two different backtraces so far.

SVN #214 should get rid of a lot of the error 4s, especially for [p1] dumps.
Posted By: Justin Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 04:03 AM
Hmm, P1 start is mapped to shift rather than 1, I guess because the inputs are imported from MAME.
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 04:08 AM
Right. It's possible to copy the inputs over to our driver and modify them for MESS if it bugs you smile
Posted By: Justin Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 04:52 AM
Grargh, except he's hardcoded the init functions to only test for Machine->gamedrv->ipt==ipt_megadri6, so all that stuff would have to be copied over too. This does everything except that, so buttons 4+ don't work.

Instead of importing the MAME driver it should probably be split into machine/megadriv.c and mame/drivers/megadriv.c mess/drivers/megadriv.c.
Posted By: Firewave Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 06:23 AM
You mean like the ST-V and saturn drivers wink
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 06:34 AM
Well, technically the mame/drivers/megadriv.c is actually what would normally be a machine/ module (it contains no drivers). Haze claims this is temporary code and he's going to rewrite it with proper structure at some point, but he's been saying that since last August and in the meantime I thought it was stupid for MESS to keep using the old code. If this gives him extra motivation, great.
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 07:07 AM
BTW, I've removed attempting to validate .bin/.gen ROMs, so you can now feed the driver any file on your disk and if it's not a Genesis ROM MESS will probably crash. In the future we should probably use the hash file to do that instead of infinite hardcoding, but I don't know how to make that happen yet smile
Posted By: Heihachi_73 Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 07:37 PM
Shouldn't the Japanese (original) version be the parent set, instead of the current US version? Not that the parent/clone stuff is used as much in MESS.
Posted By: etabeta78 Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 08:35 PM
nor such a criterion is followed in MAME either... usually MAME has the most recent version as parent (being most games from jpn, this of course means that western version is the parent), but there is no rule and exceptions are quite common...
Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/01/07 09:42 PM
Actually MAME's rule is that the most-recent non-country-specific English language version is the parent. So the ideal parent is a set that's got the latest version, is in English, and doesn't have the "GAME IS FOR USE ONLY IN [...] FULLEST EXTENT OF THE JAM" type messages.

Following that, in MESS the current "megadriv" set should be the parent, but since all regions are the same hardware and the same BIOS ROM (once that's supported) it feels kinda silly to even care smile

I am not in a place I can check right now, but the last time the driver got changed to "gen_blah", I had to update the sysinfo.dat entry so it would correctly link the text.

Can someone check the $info line and see if it needs a fix now that driver name changed?

Good catch, I just fixed it in SVN. The text could use some updating by someone more familiar with the current state of the code though.

Is HazeMD obsolete then? In other words will Haze be submitting to MESS if there are improvements in the future? My monk like policy of MESS, MAME or nothing can test the old patience sometimes...
Posted By: etabeta78 Re: Request for testing - 04/12/07 10:20 PM
nah, HazeMD is Haze's little playground and he will probably add to it neogeocd and megacd

moreover he already stated various times that

a. he wants an emulator with a fix gamelist to make easier spotting bugs. HazeMD accomplish this, MESS does not

b. he has no interest in MESS, so someone else has to port back the code (in this case arbee)

in my opinion there is space for both (at least in my HD laugh )
Posted By: bLUEbYTE Re: Request for testing - 04/13/07 07:58 AM
Hello,
Not sure if this is a bug, but today I got svn rev. 266 and compiled. I tested the genesis system. The problem is that the start button event insists to map to the third joy-button. I mapped the "1 P start" and "P 1 start" in in-emulator menu to a specific button of my gamepad, but it does not work. The mapped pad button does nothing, whereas the third pad button works as "start".
Posted By: etabeta78 Re: Request for testing - 04/13/07 02:33 PM
very stupid question: do you mean that you can pause some games by pressing C in place of start (very strange issue and probably a bug in the configuration of inputs) or that some games will start when you press C in place of start (some games worked this way on the real hardware, this would not be a bug)?
Posted By: bLUEbYTE Re: Request for testing - 04/13/07 04:46 PM
I only tested with Raiden Trad US. I'll give it a more thorough try today. But I can tell you in this game, start didn't function; neither as pause or start.
Posted By: bLUEbYTE Re: Request for testing - 04/13/07 05:36 PM
svn Revision 269:
genesis video output is broken. No video output, blank screen. Sounds can be heard. Other systems work fine. Both opengl and yuy2 are the same.

Posted By: R. Belmont Re: Request for testing - 04/13/07 08:52 PM
I wish I could see what rev. 269 *is*, but I'll bet it's the u1 update since ssf2ghw (the arcade SSF2 bootleg on Genesis h/w) also has no graphics in u1.
