NOTE: I'm not asking for roms or opinions on fighting games and those who play them - and I wash my hands of this topic if that's what others turn it into.

Now, my question:

Does anyone know whether or not this final batch of Neo Geo games - KoF 2003, Samurai Shodown 5 (Special), SNK Versus Capcom, and Metal Slug 5 - actually work?

Before I spend any more time searching, renaming, etc. etc. I would like to know if anyone has gotten these games to be playable - with or without sound glitches?

Any answers would be appreciated.

I got Metal Slug 5 working on an earlier version with an unofficial hack from <deleted>. However, the ROMs I used with the hack don't work with the official support in 0.103. Others have reported problems with these games not booting.

Sorry for naming a site, I got it from the bulletin board, not the downloads section. I didn't realise naming bulletin boards was out.

All of those games suck even if you like the earlier Neo stuff - they were farmed out to lowest-bidder Korean teams used to making porno mahjong.

That said, they will work absolutely 100% perfectly in the next version of MAME (Haze just rewrote the NG video emulation from scratch, so all raster effects will work properly). We do not recommend you try them with the support in the current release - the ROMs *will* change from the current release. I can't go into detail because MAMEdev's official statement on the matter uses several words this forum doesn't allow.

PS: Vas, we would prefer you not name sites which offer MAME hacks. Several of them have threatened MAMEdev with actual physical harm because they were making good money hiding such hacks behind walls of popups and the like, and our putting them in the official build means nobody goes to their sites anymore.

Thanks for the info - I'll sit tight until the next release then.

BTW, I disagree rather strongly about the games sucking, I had a chance to play all four while I was living in Osaka and thought they were all quite good. Samurai Shodown 5 really should have been called something more like Samurai Shodown 4 Plus, and Metal Slug 5 wasn't as good as 3 (though it's hard for me to imagine any game in that series ever being as good as 3 - no matter who makes it). But SNK Versus Capcom was a solid fighter with a far more interesting representation of both companies than Capcom had picked for their version (though I miss the high-res backgrounds) and Kof 2003 is easily on par with '98.

But I guess that's what makes horse races... wink

R. Belmont, I don't think that's accurate. From what I can tell, SNK has been producing their games in-house again since they bought the rights to their series back from the Korean companies they sold them to earlier, Mega Enterprises (who did Metal Slug 4) and Eolith (who did KOF 2001 and 2002). [Edit: Fixed a stupid mistake here. ^.^;]

Metal Slug 5, Samurai Shodown V, and KOF 2003 seem to have been done by their own internal teams, and the credits have largely Japanese names (the exceptions being the usual silly pseudonyms of indeterminate ethnicity). At least Metal Slug 5, and KOF 2003 (I've not plays SSV) are decent quality; though, as Bumpy says, MS5 wasn't up to MS3. SVC was fun, too, although it feels like it was probably rushed a bit; it's not quite up to SNK's usual quality, though it's definitely a lot better than Eolith's first try at KOF.

[Edit: Ah, I'm wrong about SSV, though. It was contracted out, though it was farmed to a low-quality Japanese developer rather than a low-quality Korean one. :b)

You guys are pretty much the only 2 NG players I've ever talked to who have anything complimentary to say about the post-Playmore games, but I guess it takes all kinds.

My experience may be unusual, and I probably shouldn't extrapolate; but if the NG players you've talked to are anything like the ones I've known, they derive too much enjoyment complaining about the current era of SNK games to even consider actually enjoying the games themselves. ;3

Is this the reason highscore save is still in, or was it taken out? I can't run the latest MAME and I missed that debate.

also: Metal Slug 5 is not that great, but it's a little better than the yawnfest that was 4. As for SNK Vs. Capcom, well, it may be broken all to hell, but the between-fight dialogue is hilarious enough to make up for that.

I'd really love to know the source of this "OMGWTFBBQ, they removed hiscore.dat support" rumor.

We keep getting accused of removing that support even though it's not true and was not planned. But much like life before lawyers, stupidity is it's own reward: Aaron now wants to remove the support *because* we keep getting accused of removing it. Even Alanis can't handle irony like that.

Canada is part of the continent of North America, so Can?ēks are American, too (just not Yanks or Seppos), and South Americans are American as well. Actually, a lot of people from South American countries resent the way people refer to the USA simply as "America" as though it's the only country there.

Euroeans do not understand there is more to the American continent than just the USA :p
Phew, it's like I'm back in engineering school again... smile I just try to make one little joke about IRONY, and... wink

Sorry, I'll revise...

Um, Alanis is Canadian, not United States of American. Sorry smf...

wink hehe

That reminds me... I once saw a hilarious parody by Self (www.selfies.com) titled "Isn't she moronic".

For those who are taking this thread too seriously, I recommend reading the incredibly eye-opening and cool history critique "Lies My Teacher Told Me". Much more meat to that than simply a flamewar on the proper name for "Americans". (http://www.uvm.edu/~jloewen/liesmyteachertoldme/liesmyteacher.html)
