Well, it looks like StarROMs has bit the dust.

StarROMs: Message to our Customers

Since October 2003, StarROMs has provided a legal source of game ROMs for classic arcade enthusiasts. Unfortunately, we will no longer be licensing or distributing game roms. Without further notice, this site will go away in the near future.
We would like to thank our users for their support over the years. If you are a customer looking for support, please send email to support@starroms.com.
I wonder if GameTap had anything to do with this.

At any rate, it's too bad. I had hopes they'd be able to continue on, and expand their selection.

While GameTap might have something to do with it. However I think Atari's recent financial troubles might be a better cause.

I wondered about that too, but I don't see how that would affect that sort of a licensing agreement. I guess it could be that Atari is having to cut back so drastically, they can't afford to keep on the people who normally deal with that stuff.

Did they ever offer any ROMs other than that first batch of Atari games they had when they debuted? If not I imagine that may have had something to do with it.

Just the fact that they didn't add on any other companies led me to think StarRoms wouldn't last. Offering Atari games was a bold stroke but they would have had to add on other companies to continue their growth, and I never saw (nor heard about) that happening.

Don't overlook the obvious.

Controversial as it may be, with illegal roms so easy to get hold of, a business model that relies on peoples conscience for sales was never going to work (IMHO).

It is obviously a shame though.

If you get the intersection of price, convinence, and selection right, you can compete with piracy. Ask Steve Jobs :-)

StarROMs failed on 2 of the 3, pretty much.

I'd really like to see GameTap offer their games for sale, rather than just the monthly subscription thing. I'd rather own than rent.
