Yes it's true. Lucas, in his lifelong bid to milk every last bit out of his franchise, is going to release the theatrical versions of the original trilogy to DVD on Sept 12.

Yes, this means no CGI, no Jabba/Han scene, no ring around the Death Star explosion, and HAN SHOOTS FIRST! Of course, it comes with the crap 2004 version of the trilogy as well if you want to watch that drek, but regardless, it's nice to know I can actually go out and buy the REAL version on DVD. My old VHS copies were getting worn out.

Very good! It would be very nice to have the original trilogy on HD/Blueray support, but I think I'm asking too much

Well, I guess I can stop working on transferring my laserdiscs to DVD now.

(And I was just about done, too. Figures.) :p

I'd keep working on it. You just know there's gotta be some way for Lucas to screw this one up.

We're going to finish it anyway. We've put far too much work into them not to.

You just have to wonder though... how "original" are his versions going to really be?

It's going to be tricky, there were loads of variations of episode iv. At least 3 dubs of aunt beru. Unless they are going to release them all using multiple angles, I would hope they release "star wars" rather than episode iv. Mainly because it's probably the only one I've never seen.

Actually, multiple audio mixes wouldn't be a big deal to do on a DVD. The trick is whether or not they have good sources of the original three mixes (mono, stereo, six-track Dolby). I'd really like to see them include them all, although I'd settle for the original 6-track Dolby mix. I don't like the remixing and additional junk that Ben Burtt has added in over the years.

I'm hoping they release the "Star Wars" crawl version, too. That's the "original", and anything else is going to just bring George even more grief. wink

(They could easily add the "Episode IV" crawl as an alternate angle though - that's what I did on my DVD transfer, so it's just a matter of whether they want to or not. There's no technical challenge to it.)
