MacMAME is not yet Universal so you are emulating an emulator when running it on Intel. You can either wait for a Universal MacMAME (Brad's made some encouraging noises about one recently on the list) or try the fully Intel-optimized SDLMAME (with a frontend if you aren't into command line apps).

That said the driver for MK3 doesn't like PPC so MacMame never played it right.

same kind of problems (lagging) had my friend who have PC (windows XP) and the newest of the newest laptop. Does MAME really take so much power?

Yes, it does.

The game in question is horribly slow even on PowerPC machine (essentially due to the sound-chip emulation). As MacMame is not yet an Universal Binary application, it's also completely emulated under Rosetta on Intel Based Macs, thus adding a second emulation layer.
No wonder the game is slow. You'll have to wait the Universal binary of MacMaMAME (which will maybe provide the same performance for the Wolf-Unit sound chip as "PC-Mame").

UMK3 should not be lagging under MAME32 on Windows. At least it was not when I was using it two years ago on a mid-range P4 laptop computer. Unless MAME went through major changes in the MK-Midway drivers since then, I guess your friend misconfigured his MAME (or has a more general problem with his computer configuration)

macjoni: you need to install SDL first. It's just a download and a drag-and-drop though :-)

1) Go to www.libsdl.org.
2) Click the "SDL 1.2" download link in the sidebar, then scroll down to "Mac OS X" under "Runtime Libraries".
3) Download the "SDL-1.2.11.dmg" disk image and open it.
4) Click 'Macintosh HD' or whatever your Mac's hard disk is named in the left pane of a Finder window, then open the Library folder
5) Drag the SDL.framework folder from the SDL disk image into the 'Frameworks' folder.

Then SDLMAME will work.

Try turning filter on and off (ctrl-F5 while a game is playing).
