I'm trying this on 1.40 and I get the error, "Unsupported or Malformed-" and the rest of the error is cut off by my theme smirk. Every other translation or hack I have tried runs fine.

The specific one I'm trying is goodtools verified as:
Akumajou Special - Boku Dracula-kun (J) [T+Eng1.02_Vice]

I've tried the other versions of this translation and the one other translation with the same error. Is there any way I can fix the rom? I didn't see anything wrong with the header, but I'm not that experienced with messing with those.

The original, untranslated ROM uses mapper 23. Is your ROM using mapper 23?

EDIT: Also, make sure Nestopia's internal database is enabled.

The internal database is enabled and the ROM's iNES header has the mapper set to 23. No dice.

Well, I found a newer version of this translation at romhacking.net (v1.03), and soft-patching works fine.

Ok that works, but is there a proper way to hard-patch the (J)(!) version of the ROM with this patch? I'm using Lunar IPS.

From the change log for Nestopia v1.38:
Code:
  - Mappers 21, 23, 25 and 185 no longer supported using plain iNES
    files because of format restrictions.

In other words, if your ROM is in the INES format and uses one of those mappers, you won't be able to play the game unless it is found in the ROM database. Therefore, you won't be able to perform a hard IPS patch on the ROM since doing so will prevent Nestopia from identifying it from its DB.

(If only the NES 2.0 sub-mapper designation caught on. That would certainly have offered a remedy for this problem.)

Do the devs add translations/hacks to the database? I'd like to request this one added if so. If not, at least soft-patching works even if it's not ideal.
