Adjust the "dead zone" setting in MAME to a larger value and that should get it to center correctly.

OK, I've gone back several times now searching through the menus looking for "dead zone". I'm assuming it's somewhere under the input for all games section? But I was never able to find it. The only reference to it I could find by googling was for a Windows MAME GUI. Do you remember how exactly I get to this setting in MAME OS X? Thanks-

Preferences - Inputs.

Pretty straightforward.

D'oh! I had assumed any input configuration had to be done within the game input menus; I never thought to look through the "Preferences" menu. Found it- thanks!

Yeah it can be confusing. I think stuff that is passed on to the executable as starting parameters is located in the front-end preferences and things that can be changed "on the fly" in-game are located in the MAME menus after launching.
