I'm using SDLMAME 0.128 pre-packaged for Ubuntu, as it can be found here:

and I'm using it under Ubuntu 8.04.1 (hardy) AMD64 version.

The issue is that with some games when I use the combos:

cursor left + cursor up OR
cursor right + cursor down

to move diagonally, the fire key stops working.

So I cannot move diagonally AND shoot at the same time. Note that any other key combo works (I can move and shoot on the other two diagonals).

Games known to have the issue are Juno First and 1942.

Any suggestion for debugging/fixing/working around?

Have you tried these combinations on a joystick or gamepad? Or with fire mapped to a mouse button? It sounds to me like a common hardware limimation in many keyboards.

Yeah, it's quite possible depending on the keyboard that it ghosts that way.

Behavior confirmed: if I map fire to the mouse it DOES work, so it appears to be a keyboard issue....crap :-(
