also anyone know a better package for scanning than xsane?

unfortunately if you wander off the beaten track to specialised areas your only option is to use the software that came with the scanner. meaning using Windows.
Linux might be ideal for most general tasks but as soon as you want to work with unsupported or poorly supported hardware, reverting to Windows is the only option.
I keep several Windows machines around just for that purpose for use with my dumping equipment. They wouldn't work otherwise.

That book sounds like a real find. If it can be fully scanned and PDF'd that'd be nice. I'd like to read the whole thing if possible :-)

That's frequently true, but in this case iscan may be what the OP needs. Either way I'd love to see that book

The sections that most interest me are 1, 5, 6 & 7.

Heh, Windows hates these TIFFs. (like I'm sure you care )

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - no preview available.
QuickTime Picture Viewer - could not display because it is an unsupported format.
MS Office Document Imaging - One or more pages in this file cannot be viewed in Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
Paint - Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported.

The only programs I have that can read them is Irfanview and Adobe Photoshop 6.0.

heh didn't know that. I remember using irfanview back in the day, it was pretty good.

I'll probably do the TI section next, I'll see how other file formats look if I can keep the file sizes from balloning

Good stuff in this section. Theres schematics for a system called Texas Instruments Space War, where you can select from 21 different games which looks pretty interesting. Also some chip block diagrams that might be useful for discrete sound emulation

try opening tiffs in gimp or alternatiff; it can handle them properly, unlike microsoft's thingus and quicktime.
