That's bizarre. It sounds like he's mapped a digital stick to an analog one without the analog emulation, which I didn't think was possible.

has anybody using an analog stick been able to play Super Breakout on the MESS v136 Atari 5200

IF YES then please tell us the settings

it's no good just saying random suggestions as it should be a lot easier than this to set up a joystick

I have a usb joypad that look's like a playstaion pad

it has 10 button's a joystick on the left and an analog stick on the right I have set it up in windows and the meters show the data rise from 0 to 255 when I move the stick (not jump it is an increase so I could get it to 65 if I move it just a bit)

when you let go of the joypad (the right analog one) it self centres....so this should tell mess I have recentered the atari joystick as mess thinks that is what I am using but it doesn't,it ignores that data.

now the atari controller has two pots and when you move the atari controller, one of the pots told it the left and right position, so if you moved the atari controller halfway to the left the bat on the screen would move from the center to halfway to the left side and STOP. then when you recentered the atari controller the bat followed and recentered but this is not happening.

Please try the game, it would take 10 min's

I intend to try it... I'll need to borrow one of my kids analog usb joysticks... I haven't gotten arround to it yet... Patience, man patience...

I intended to test it, but it appears that my analog controller is broken. I'll see if I can dig up another one and try it out.

No need for the rant. I was just explaining that the 5200 joystick is essentially 2 paddle controllers (one for X Axis & one for Y Axis) with no recentering mechanism, so the "feel" of the game will likely be off no matter what. I don't think the 5200 controllers have a dead zone, so I imagine that should be turned off for the analog controller (just thinking out loud for when I have a controller to test).

I have confirmed the problem with svn 7438 and 5416, the problem is that the a5200 emulation is treating the value from the analog joystick as an increment or decrement value, rather than a positional value. So if you move the analog joystick left, the paddle starts moving left, but you center your joystick, the paddle in the game stops, instead of moving back right to the center. I am updating to the latest svn now so I can look at the code. I am not familiar with the a5200 driver but maybe I can figure it out...

Nope, I can't figure it out... Other than somewhere it is treating the analog stick input as if it is digital... Sort of...

There are others who know the a5200 code much better than me. Hopefully they can help. I will keep looking...

as a close second, does anyone know if it would be possible to get it working with a mouse?

i gave it a shot, but it was just as uncontrollable as it was with the controller.

by the way, what's the command line variable to enable mouse on startup? is it -mouse like in mame?

MESS inherits all of the MAME command line parameters.
