I tried to run the Windows version of MESS in WINE, but I always get a crash

like this (MESS 0.136, i686):

fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer
fixme:htmlhelp:HtmlHelpW HH case HH_INITIALIZE not handled.
fixme:d3d_caps:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Unrecognized GL_VERSION "3.2.9252 Compatibility Profile Context".
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x64eeec,0x00000000), stub!
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0000000c at address 0x6ed9dee3 (thread 0009), starting debugger...

; trying an old version:

"...wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0000000c at address 0x6ea79c23 (thread 0009), starting debugger" (MESS 0.125)

and now something new:

fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer
fixme:msvcrt:__lconv_init stub
fixme:htmlhelp:HtmlHelpW HH case HH_INITIALIZE not handled.
fixme:d3d_caps:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Unrecognized GL_VERSION "3.2.9252 Compatibility Profile Context".
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x80def9c,0x00000000), stub!
wine: Call from 0x7b8450c9 to unimplemented function ddraw.dll.DirectDrawEnumerateExW, aborting
wine: Unimplemented function ddraw.dll.DirectDrawEnumerateExW called at address 0x7b8450c9 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: unimplemented function ddraw.dll.DirectDrawEnumerateExW called in 32-bit code (0x7b8450c9).

Running wine-1.1.28 on kernel 2.6.31.12, x86_64

Anyone more successful?

Those error messages indicate the (over 2 years old) version of Wine you're running can't cope with OpenGL 3.2-level drivers, which is perhaps not surprising. (The second set is that MESS is calling a DDRAW function which that version of Wine doesn't handle). Try updating Wine, or configuring MESS for GDI video.

More to the point, why would you want to run MESS in WINE when there is a perfectly good SDLMESS port that will run on platform that WINE can run on?

He might be trying to debug a bug in his driver that so far is only showing in the Windows build and he runs Linux? Not that I think that would work...

That would work fine for doing that, but it's strongly unlikely you'd see a Windows bug that didn't also occur in Linux x86/x64.

Unless it was OS-specific code (such as messui).. but then you'd use Windows for that... wouldn't you?

I *am* using SDLMESS. Why I care about WINE? Because I'd like to know how to work with the messui in Windows, as I only know well the pop-up menu in SDLMESS.

I have a dual-boot system, but it would be more convenient to launch MESS in WINE instead of rebooting.
