How do you create a blank hard disk and install dos? I have tried msdos 3.3, 5.0, and ibm pc dos 7.0. I have various problems with each under MESS emulation. With 3.3, fdisk locks up and freezes. Msdos 5.0 fdisk runs, but when I try to format I get "unable to write boot sector" or something similar. Has anyone else been able to install dos under MESS? If so, how?

while I haven't been able to properly use hd with the pc drivers, from floppy I was able to start MSDOS 3.3 with the at386/at486 and MSDOS 5.0 with at586 (when the floppy drive works)

I think 3.3 can start from floppy with older emulated pcs as well (even if I don't know the minimal requirements)

Wow, I cant believe that IBM published both Schematics AND BIOS source code for their PCs at that time. (referring to the PDF linked from the bug entry). Or how many parts were in these machines.

Have all the various ROMs and PROMs shown in those schematics been dumped? (do we even need to dump/decap e.g. the keyboard controler?)

The IBM PC was famously designed by committee, and it shows in many places (especially the parts count).

AFAIK we have dumps of all of the MCUs, and in MESS even the MCU inside the keyboard is dumped and emulated.

Ahh, cool. The Mac section can be greatly pared down: there's a list of known pre-iMac boot ROMs here, and I have dumps of all but 3 of them (the 3 which don't have MD5 sums) in my possession.
