In fact, some games run faster than the original hardware did. I did some comparing with Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV, and yeah, there are less slowdowns in MESS than on the Genesis console.

Verified this myself, I own a physical copy of the game.

The core doesn't support wait states afaik. Is it much faster?

Waitstates aren't the issue, the DMA timing etc. is just an approximation right now, and the most likely cause of any differences.

Plus waitstates doesn't make a lot of a difference on a "fast" CPU like the M68k.
