SVN r4151:
  • new: the file-chooser now offers an additional context-menu item to open regular files (not ZIP content yet!) externally by launching the default application that's associated with the file's MIME type (or extension)

Feature req, or maybe this is doable since checking in on this thread some time ago.

It would be nice to have an option to make the QMC2 directory contain all the settings files too so it's easily portable to different PCs. It would save time having to set up favorites and layout etc.

Thanks for the x64 builds btw, working fine on Win7 x64.

You can use the "-qmc2_config_path" parameter to make QMC2 portable.

Example:
c:\Frontend\QMC2\qmc2-mess.exe -qmc2_config_path c:\Frontend\QMC2\Settings

Yeah, using -qmc2_config_path is the way to go... however, for the configuration to be really portable from one system to another, you'd have to make sure that all paths referred to in qmc2.ini (i.e. image directories, dat-files etc.) are the same, and you may want to use relative paths to accomplish that - relative to QMC2's current working directory, that is.

There's been a discussion about this a while ago, and a solution for users who don't want to set the working directory explicitly (for instance through the application icon's properties), but want QMC2 to use its installation path as the working directory automatically. Please see bug tracker ID #23 and the forum-post it links to.

From the QMC2 wiki (the option is on the 'Front end' / 'GUI' tab of the main setup dialog):

Quote:
  • Set working directory from executable: when this option is set, QMC2 will change its run-time working directory to the path where the running executable is stored -- this may be useful if you want to use relative paths elsewhere in the configuration (i. e. for portable setups).

While the MAME devs can't commit their work at the moment, I'm making a bit of progress with QMC2 (SVN r4155):
  • fix: avoid crash when no game/machine is selected and a 'play' action is triggered
  • imp: file-chooser: opened ZIP contents are sorted as well
  • new: added a 'personal rich-text notes' detail for games/machines (same as the software-notes feature, but for this time for systems)

One question regarding the QCHDman tool: Is there a way to add an entire game directory to an existing chd hd file through this tool? I can't find an option to add files to my atvga chd file.

Thanks for the info - was able to alter the settings location via the switch and then just copy everything into that directory from the .qmc2 folder and it worked fine.

@RColtrane: qchdman is a pure GUI to chdman at the moment, so no... there's more to come, but I doubt I can do what you're asking for. At least not without the help of external tools that can work with certain formats (and CHDs) directly.

Hi QMC2,

Which would be these external tools? I used to create my chd's using Wimgtool.exe but it's not in the latest MESS dirtribution packs anymore. I just want to add a single game folder to an existing .chd file. How can I do that? Which tool may I use to do that now?

The usual path is to extract the CHD to a raw image, use WinImage (not WImgTool) to add/delete/manipulate files/folders, then close WinImage and recreate the CHD.
