I have a feeling in the next few years MESS is going to become the ultimate platform for legacy PC gaming.

Yeah sure add another set of speakers to every driver and hook it up like we do in mame. But if you do that then nobody will actually fix the architectural. We've got plenty of technical debt, we don't need more.

I couldn't reproduce it with the file you gave me. I think you'll have to provide the os chd & the config you were using.

You're talking about digital reading of CD Audio tracks via the IDE ribbon cable instead of using the analog small read cable?

If yes, it's been ages since it's been implemented in Windows...

(probably XP)

It seems like even windows 98 could do it with IDE drives.

I think it became the default in 2000 (and possibly ME) to read the actual audio data from the CD rather than just play it as audio with a pass-thru.

I remember because I had a CD drive that really, really wasn't very good at doing that.

Prior to that there was various audio ripping software (AudioCatalyst etc?) that could do it, and like you say WinAMP plugins, although a lot of audio ripping software back then just used the regular audio hookup because quite a lot of drives had terrible audio-read support not just mine ;-)

I'm fairly sure WMP in XP could do raw digital audio reading, yeah.

Given that we're talking 3 MCFG lines of technical debt to eliminate a tall mountain of user-facing debt, I'm ok with that. Unless you have a single-card-on-multiple-buses system ready to go that isn't completely gross.

It's more than 3 lines, but more importantly it's lazy.

Every change I've made lately I've been hampered by other peoples past laziness. If we're to survive we need to get people out of being lazy.

I still get a disk write error when just copying the file from that ISO. For whatever reason, with larger files, it will just stop at some point and eventually give the disk write error. Error log shows a string of reads, but no attempt to write afterwards.

Edit: Lesson learned - HD images don't like being run from a flash drive. :P
