Thanks!
OK I've got all of those scans, I shall spend a couple of days working my way through them.

No gradients‽ ...ouch! Is it ok with alpha blending? I may be able to get something close by layering semi transparent objects but I'm inclined to do it right and wait for the software to catch up. Maybe I'll do both. OC22 and JB63 make extensive use of alpha to approximate the inking artifacts and increase the perceived colour count, is that ok in the MAME svg renderer?

Flat color alpha channel, what you did in these SVGs, is supported.

I took several high resolution photos with my camera of both screens of my MW-56 G&W in ACL mode.

I'm sorry to say, even after manually separating the LCD segments from the background graphics in MW56, I can't make a good SVG from these photos. There's too much noise and brightness differences.
Tanukichi, I hope it's not too much trouble, but are you willing to open the handheld, remove the fore/background, and try to scan the screen with the handheld still opened? I think that's how JonasP did it.

What i did was remove the bg/fg, replace fg layer with extra polarized film, put bg layer behind reflective layer and reassemble. Otherwise there was too little pressure on the lcd to make good contact.
I played around a bit with white and black levels and gamma for good contrast with as little noise as possible. For some reason scanning inverted seemed to give better results.

The printed films were scanned as transparents on a photo scanner.

Everything at 1200 dpi.

In that case, the scanner images would still be blurry with Tanukichi's scanner. The only way to get clean vector images from these photos is by manual tracing. I can give it a try, it will take a while.

*edit* tried a few segments and nope, it's not up to par.

Regarding the backgrounds/foregrounds, are you guys keeping the different drawn layers separate? That would come in handy whenever somebody wants to have a go at adding some depth and lighting effects to simulate the shadows and such.
