NTSC is unlikely to work without tweaking certain settings unless the system you're applying it to runs at the same resolution as the NES (256x224, I believe).

Performance is certainly a concern. What happens if you open bgfx/chains/hlsl.json and remove lines 171 and 176 (the "scale" lines)?

If I remove those "scale" lines it gets a great boost (although it looks worse):
From 540% to 928% with adjustments disabled and from 50% to 174% with adjustments enabled.

Also I get a good improvement if I disabled Defocus{X,Y} (From 174% to 251%).

Does the metal bgfx backend work? I get a black screen on 2012 iMac and El Capitan. Sound still comes through and the log does not show errors.

Metal on OS X isn't stable yet - try again in 10.11.5. 10.11.4 and previous expose major behavior differences per GPU vendor to apps, and it's not supposed to.
