There is an insightful discussion taking place over on the AtariAge 2600 Programming forum here:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/249865-tia-sounding-off-in-the-digital-domain/

In part, it includes code released under the GPL2 license which addresses some of the remaining issues with TIA sound. The Stella author has already looked into incorporating it into the aforementioned emulator.

The code and discussion may be of value to MAME as well. smile

Unsurprisingly the "problem" is ultimately similar to one we already fixed for the AY-3-891x in MAME: people tying the individual voice output pins together.

Stephen updated the code to C++ and provided the respective CXX and HXX files for Stella, here.

It may make it easier for any interested to apply to tiasound.cpp and tiasound.h from the MAME source, accordingly.
