I'd like to to point people that haven't yet realized, to this:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/commandline/wsl/about

Microsoft cooperated with Canonical and since a few insider versions, you can actually install and use BASH (including all popular Linux commands) within Windows 10 natively.

I have installed it, works as advertised. Even the disks are in \mnt etc.

I wonder how this could affect MAME development (compiling etc.). Or if it should. Definitely something for the team to look into. Could potentially simplify things.

You can compile Linux applications in that environment. It's not applicable for building Windows-targeted MAME since we already use the Windows-native MinGW environment and not a UNIX emulation layer like Cygwin or MSYS.

This is some kind of strategic asshole move intended to hurt Linux, or at the very least, discourage people to switch away from Windows. I absolutely guarantee you.

Read up on Embrace, Extend, Extinguish - Microsoft's go-to strategy to kill the competition.

You're about 15 years too late on that - this is Satya Nadella's Microsoft, not Gates and Ballmer's. They've open-sourced about half the company, they make a very compelling cloud platform that fully supports Linux, iOS, Android, and OS X, and they're very close to beating Clang on C++ standards compliance.

How dissapointingly naive of you smirk

Only recently they tried to get a perpetually internet connected blackbox in millions of people's living rooms, hooked up to a sensitive microphone and camera, and disregard consumer rights in the progress. But they didn't get away with it, because they were simply too upfront and arrogant about it.

So they're doing it now with Windows 10, an OS they're aggressively trying to trick people into installing it.

Did I mention this company was actively trying to curb the development of the internet in the second half of the 90's?

Oh, and starting from yesterday, they decided to directly intervene with that pesky thing called free speech in my part of the world (at least other tech giants are involved too)

Fuck Microsoft, man. They're the prime example of scumbag crony capitalism, and they're worse than ever. To ignore all this because of their C++ standards compliance is a pretty skewed reason, to say the least.

Rant over - sorry for intruding smile

I didn't intend this thread to become a flame war against MSFT (or anybody).

You don't like Windows, don't use them. It's a free world. Yeah, even if MSFT (supposedly) doesn't want that.

Gonna play some blackjack with Elvis now.

I do have to admit that there's one thing I'm envying Windows users for at the moment, and that's the new Doom game.

Back on topic, right now there's still no way to get any kind of UI or graphics interaction from the Linux subsystem (well except using X11 with a windows-native XServer).

So no, this doesn't affect MAME, at least not yet smile

Also, this is not the first time a subsystem for UNIX appeared in Windows, just google SFU/Interix/OpenNT (although I know that this is technically a bit different)
