With the end of November in sight, it’s time to check out MAME 0.216! We’ve addressed the reported issues with last month’s bgfx update, and made a whole lot of little improvements to MAME’s internal user interface. In particular, setting up controls should be easier, and several issues affecting macOS users with non-English number format settings have been fixed. Some of the issues caused bad settings to be written to INI files. If you still don’t see the filter list panel on the system selection menu, try removing the ui.ini file.

This month, we’re able to present two unreleased 1970s prototypes from Italian developer Model Racing: their internal code names are Cane and Orbite. With the assistance of former Model Racing employees, the source code was extracted from the original disks. These games are incomplete, but they provide a unique look into early CPU-based arcade development. Game & Watch titles continue to be emulated, with the addition of Mario The Juggler, and the panorama screen Mickey Mouse and Donkey Kong Circus games in this release.

This release brings GameKing emulation to MAME. The system-on-a-chip used in this low-cost, low-resolution hand-held console from the early 2000s has been identified and emulated. Games for the colour-screen GameKing III are also playable. Acorn BBC Micro emulation has been re-worked to support internal expansion boards, and a number of additional peripherals are now available. ZX Spectrum emulation has been enhanced with better open bus read behaviour and support for two Miles Gordon Technology peripherals.

It works great here on OSX Mojave (again, thank you very much for the fixes!), however the Language settings seems to be non-functional, even if I declare the correct path to "language" folder the UI setting does nothing, the value and path are correctly read and written in the .INI file but are ignored by the executable.

Which language did you choose? Not all of them are actually translated. French, Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) all work.

I've choosen Italian, just to give a try, I usually prefer English language for UI because the meaning of the single commands is well known and universally adopted. The strange thing is that even if I choose "English" i have the same error in the console window (on launch only) as the language was not found, I can provide more details about this later, back at home and I will check also for the other languages known to work.

I'd say it's a path issue if you're getting an error message about opening the file.

Just to be sure: is the "languages" folder in the MAME source distribution the one to set for translated UI? I have tried either manually editing the path in the .INI file or using the graphical UI configuration menus embedded in MAME for the same settings (followed by the usual "Save Configuration") with the same result. I remember well that until 0.215 that setting did work and no error was reported to console window on start.

You need to actually compile the language files. MAME doesn't load the .po source files, it loads the compiled .mo files. The .mo files are created at the start of a build, around the same time it produces the compressed internal layout source files You can copy a language folder from a directory where you've built MAME, or you can extract one from a Windows binary package.

That's right. I've discovered the reason: I compiled the binaries without moving the "language" folder just after the build, therefore I deleted all and when I discovered that folder was missing I have unpacked the source again moving that directory in the MAME/MESS binaries home but then the compiled .mo files were missing. But... couldn't the build process, once completed, saving all in a "distribution" folder where inside are just the needed files leaving outside all the source and intermediate build stuff? It would be much easier to drop that final directory (with MAME/MESS binaries, artwork, language, samples folders and so on) over the previous user install instead of choosing folder by folder what copy and what doesn't. Just an idea, of course :-)

There are long-term plans for replacing the build system with some better-supported alternative which would allow a 'make dist', but that's going to be a lot of work.
