I am running MAME 0.219 on a Windows 7 box. If I open a cmd window, go to the MAME folder and run MAME, all works as expected.

However, if I try to double click on MAME64.EXE from file explorer inside windows, the screen goes black, pointer turns into the "loading" circle, and eventually it times out with a "MAME has stopped working" window.

Any ideas? I couldn't find any messages with others having this problem.

Steve

If you run from the cmd window, are you running a specific game or just launching into the menu?

Just launching into the Mame menu, for both cases.

See this bug report

https://mametesters.org/view.php?id=7565

If you enter Mame via the command line, in theory there should be a message of some kind left behind in the console when you exit.

Or, you could try setting "window 1" in your mame.ini, it might make a difference.

@Robbert Thank you! Because I am just getting my machine setup, I didn't have speakers plugged in yet...I didn't think this would be a problem, but it turns out I NEED something plugged in (speakers, headphones, anything) so MAME can start DirectSound. When I launched from Windows, MAME would try to send an error message and couldn't, and crashed. Just like the bug report says. I plugged in headphones, and it now launches from windows with no problems, and I have sound!

I didn't have to change anything in mame.ini, "window 0" worked fine with headphones plugged in. I tried "window 1" and it works with or without headphones plugged in. Without the headphones, I just get an error message window, and once OK'd MAME works properly.

Much appreciated! I don't know how long it would have taken me to figure this out!
