Because I am just getting my machine setup, I didn't have speakers plugged in yet...I didn't think this would be a problem, but it turns out I NEED something plugged in (speakers, headphones, anything) so MAME can start DirectSound. When I launched from Windows, MAME would try to send an error message and couldn't, and crashed. Just like the bug report says. I plugged in headphones, and it now launches from windows with no problems, and I have sound!
I didn't have to change anything in mame.ini, "window 0" worked fine with headphones plugged in. I tried "window 1" and it works with or without headphones plugged in. Without the headphones, I just get an error message window, and once OK'd MAME works properly.
Much appreciated! I don't know how long it would have taken me to figure this out!
