I received an archive of firmware files from Vince, essentially two sets of firmware ROMs from DECmate IIs. The character generator ROMs aren't socketed on his machine, so there's a hitch, but a per this thread there are ROMs from a DECmate III forthcoming that will include a chargen. I've put my research and Vince's dumps into an archive on the FTP.

Is it the same character generator, though? DEC loved to make minor changes to the character generator, as can be seen between the vt100 and the dec rainbow 100a and the dec rainbow 100b.

We're still missing the "extended" character set rom for the vt100, it was standard on the now-very-rare vt100-wp word-processing intended machines, as well as some european machines. The character set should mostly match the second half of the rom from the rainbow 100A, but I do not believe it is exactly the same.

Here's Vince's workflow, he had problems dumping the 2716's directly as his programmer would cut the last 16 bytes of each dump, but saving in Motorola format worked.

Quote
I placed the Motorola format file in the "dumps" folder, and ran the "mot2bin" script to reassemble the 12-bit words into 390392.bin. Then I ran the disassembler, double checked that the assembler file compiles and generates a binary equivalent to 390392.bin. If so, I rename the .pal and .lst to have the basename 390392. These steps are automated in "dumps/Makefile".

I then manually copied 390392.pal over to the "firmware" directory. The steps there want to run the build in the other direction, so this prevents over-writing 390392.bin as well as helping me stay organized.
There, the process is to assemble Charles' 358360.pal and my 390392.pal,
then run the "DECmateII" script, converting each 12-bit binary into a set of three ROM images in MAME format. Those steps are automated in "firmware/Makefile".

OK, some progress today. I built some verification scripts which take the Motorola format and directly create ROM images in the MAME format, for use in automatic verification of the source builds. That found a bug in the generation of DECmateII ROMs. The methodology there is slightly changed too, so that the Motorola dumps of individual ROMs are available, and split/combined as needed when generating PDP-8 files.

He's put his DECmate stuff on his SVN: DECmate SVN

I've also included the DECmate III images, scripts, etc.

Since there is no dump of the 358E2, 359E2, or 360E2 ROMs yet, those are currently only found in the "firmware" sub-directory, as generated from Charles' source code. I also copied the 331E4 character generator ROM into there (having things all in one place makes verification easier), even though it isn't really being regenerated from source code.

As usual, the Makefiles hopefully sort of document the workflows for each sub-directory.

The HD-6120 CPU is now emulated in MAME.
