I am getting a 900mhz Athlon Socket A CPU to replace the 750mhz Athlon CPU in a console I eventually want to hook up to a TV, I'm thinking of using it some console games, arcade, including Zinc...

I'm getting the CPU for $12.50, including S/H...I was wondering what improvents I might see?

I also have a Blaze Playstation 2 player controller, and a Dual Shock ready to use as gaming devices...It'll run Win98SE, and I have to get some memory for it, I was thinking 256megs more to put it to 512 megs...

I'm NOT expecting to play Tekken 3, but it looks like my 900 can handle SOME zinc games, and the ones it can play, I want to be able to play on TV...

BTW, what would be the minimum Video card with S-Video that'd be needed for Zinc? A Raedon 7000?

I'm slowly putting together the pieces to make the 'older' system a multiconsole / arcade machine hooked up to the TV, any suggestions are appreciated...

$12 for a long discontinued cpu isn't bad I suppose. However, I would probably install Windows 2000 instead of Windows 98, because there is still driver support for win2k. Furthermore, some of the newer emulators have features which only work under Win2k/XP.

Also I would go for a 64MB Radeon 9200 instead of the Radeon 7000. The 9200 is directX8 complient and supports Pixel Shader 1.4, the 7000 is a directX7 part and completly lacks pixel shaders. Since the difference in cost usually varies between $5 - $10, I would splurge the little extra and get the better video card. (eventhought the system is really old, having a slightly better video will help).

Does anything but a handful of games actually use 1.x shaders? As I understand it "1.x shaders" actually encompassed two completely different and incompatible standards, one used by NVidia and the other used by ATI, with the result that games basically had to have two graphics engines if they were to work with both makers' cards.

Buy a computer that isn't a piece of crap. ZiNc is designed for slow-as-hell machines, not MAME.

I don't see why you'd build an 800 MHz machine now - you can get well past 1 GHz for well under $100.

What'd you suggest for around $3-400?
I thought a 2.0 GHZ 3100 Athlon with 512megs-1gig, would be acceptable? *Including an OEM of Windows XP Pro*

Or am I setting my sights too low?

I'm working with a limited budget and Tiger Direct...

Well a new video card helped the 800 a little... Not much =/ I hope to get a better processor soon.
