It's come to my attention via reading a datasheet that the Aries 3 processor, of Nuon "fame", has an ALU instruction called "butt". I kid you not. Therefore, it is now my obligation to make a driver for the system at some point.

Interestingly enough, the Nuon platform doesn't appear to have a separate GPU. The impression I get from the datasheet is that the Aries 3 is designed with 3D in mind via software rendering, though I might be wrong.

At any rate, what I'd like to know is if there are any dumps of the boot ROM(s) from any Nuon players kicking around, and if there are any dumps of game discs as well. PM me if you have a line on either, though boot ROMs are more useful in the short term.

Game (released ones) discs have all been dumped except Next Tetris and Crayon Shin-Chan.

Not sure about the boot ROMs though, but I don't think they have ever been dumped.
There's an emulator named Nuance that emulates the system to some extent (albeit very slowly), but afaik it does that at HLE and uses a replacement bios. Sadly the emulator author passed away several years ago.

Never seen Iron Soldier 3 image in the wild, only demo. However, both Iron Soldier 3 and Next Tetris are mentioned in the Nuance compatibility list, so they were dumped but maybe hoarded. Also, I've never seen a dump of Spring 2000 Interactive Sampler, which was bundled with one of the players.
There are also 4 movie DVDs exist, which have additional menus and features for NUON players.

Are you aware MAME doesn't support DVDs yet? smile IIRC, the format isn't even properly supported in chdman.

News to me. We've got dozens of DVDs in MAME. In CHDs.

Data DVD is supported - we have a number of FMV AV mahjong DVD images courtesy of AeroCityMayor. DVD is a relatively simple linear sector-based format most of the time unless you're doing weird shit like packet writing or custom scrambling a la GC/Wii. (Yes, we are missing the key area, the BCA, and the servo data in the "wobble".)

There's a nuon capable Samsung unit on German Ebay now ... if I can get it for a song, I'll dump the BIOS or send it to somebody who can.

Yes, but aren't they treated the same way as HDDs instead of the proper format support?

I have dumps for both IS3 and a Toshiba 2000 Sampler (not sure if that's what you are referring to), I never checked if they were the real thing or not to be honest. I guess I could try booting them on Nuance and see.

I know a few members at nuon-dome own Next Tetris, I'm not sure if they are ok with asking for dumps on their forums though, but might be the best bet to get it dumped considering the rarity of the game. Shin-Chan will be much worse considered it was only released in Korea.

For all intents and purposes they are HDDs. There's no such thing as alternate track types or sector formats, and DVD-Video is still just a bunch of sectors in a UDF filesystem after you decrypt it.

"Proper" format support on the scale of CDs is neither possible nor necessary.
