The recently-made Apple IIe "Scroll Scroll Scroll" demo out of France (which does arcane tricks to split the screen into 3 modes at once) wasn't working properly on MESS. That was just fixed in GIT:

Another uPD7810. I think we've discovered where they were actually popular smile

Holding down "FEED" while switching on the printer starts the test print ... boy am I glad we left those things behind ... and the NEC 24pin ones were the better ones ...

Another classic, the Star NL-10

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55419307/Printers/Star%20NL-10.rar

I was a bit surprised to find only the MCU and some RAM on the mainboard, the ROM is on the module - according to the C64 Wiki there were three modules - Commodore, parallel and IBM PC.

This is the ROM of the IBM PC module.

Working during semester holidays while at university gave me enough money to buy my first "real" printer, a HP Deskjet 500

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55419307/Printers/HP%20Deskjet%20500.rar

A 486-33 running Wordperfect 5.1 on DOS and the Deskjet were my tools of choice for quite some time.

I dumped the mask ROM by clamping an IC socket over the chip still in its board ... not the preferred way to do, I know. But cleartext and the tell-tale patterns of encoded characters show that it should be all right.

OG was talking about how MAME should handle printer output in the shout box some time ago. For me, ideally output should be delivered as PDF files, e.g. via Ghostscript.

In a way, exactly the opposite of what this software does that I used quite a lot in DOS days ... with Ultrascript PC you select a postscript printer in your wordprocessor of choice, and your actual printer in USPC, which does the translating. This gives you fancy fonts and font sizes even when your printer natively only knows Courier.

Copying my proposal from a private forum:

Quote:
- An emulated printer creates a new printer abstraction by giving the color depth and either the absolute pixel resolution of a page or paper size plus DPI.
- The abstraction would supply both continuous-feed and discrete-page modes. In a concession to the reality of modern printers the output would ultimately be split into pages either way.
- Each time you start a page you get a new page bitmap to draw on (a core bitmap so you can use drawgfx stuff on it?)
- OSD would provide a window similar to a PDF viewer where you view one page at a time with a strip of page thumbnails on the side of the window, and the ability to send one or more pages to the system's actual printer. A 'quiet mode' where it doesn't show the printer window unless the user requests it would be handy, as would a 'just go ahead and print everything to the system's real printer without user interaction' option.
- Obviously some way for the user to discard pages they don't want and save memory would be useful as well.
- Optional green-bar paper emulation mode? smile

That sounds very comfortable!

And yes, green-bar paper is a must smile

How about randomized bits of paper and lint thrown into the works? grin
