Heh, Space Cruiser and Football together in one game. I just picked up Dunk n Sunk, which is Basketball and Sub Chase.

The LCD driver in some Microvision units is labeled SCUS0488; others are labeled HLCD0488. Mego Sea Battle has an LCD driver labeled SCU0506.

Another Handheld Museum thread talks about Gabriel Computer Othello that uses an LCD controller HLCD0541P (http://www.handheldmuseum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=701) and I've got a Mattel Computer Chess game that has 2 LCD controllers labeled HLCD0601. Interestingly, the chips in both games have the ".H" marking that the Simon and Battleship chips have.

Yeah if you can get any info on the 0601, that would be great. It's probably similar to the 0488, and studying the pinout and code should help a lot.

I haven't seen enough Microvisions to know if any chips other than the SCUS0488 labeled ones were used.

But what I'm wondering is if the SCUS chips were made by Hughes. Or did the company (whoever they are) just 2nd source the 0488 used in Microvision? The ".H" text on the chips makes me think that the SCUS chips and the HLCD0541P and HLCD0601 were made by the same company. But I'm not ready to decap one of the 0601s yet.

At first it seemed that just Milton Bradley used the SCUS chips (Simon, Battleship and Microvision), but then I remembered the Gabriel Othello thread and the Mattel Chess game.

Sorry, let me clarify: he has datasheets for the HLCD0488 and HLCD0541 which I'll prioritize. He also has datasheets for: HLCD0438, HLCD0515, HLCD0538, HLCD0539, HLCD0540, HLCD0542, HLCD0548, HLCD0550, HLCD0551, HLCD0607.

Maybe I'll try for HLCD0607 datasheet and hope it's similar to HLCD0601.

BTW, Ingo's prefix list says "SCU = MOSTEK>SGS-THOMSON>STMICROELECTRONICS", Philips would have inherited that IIRC which may explain that "Philips HLCD0541P" mention I found.

Gotcha. I just double-checked to make sure I didn't write it down wrong, and the chips in Mattel Chess are unfortunately 0601s.

SCU=MOSTEK>SGS-THOMSON>STMICROELECTRONICS is very interesting. I've decapped a few Mostek chips- I'll go back and look at them and see if I notice any similarities to the SCUS chips. It seems like they all have Mostek on the die somewhere, though.

I just got Dunk 'N Sunk. It's a basketball game... It's a submarine chase...

CPU is a 40-pin DIP, just house markings:
GE-E 1V2280 8001

Pinning it out, it's another Rockwell PPS-4/1; MM76L or MM76EL, depending on the amount of ROM space (probably EL, since L just has 640 bytes, and EL has a whopping 1K).

The case and PCB have spots for 2 more buttons.

It's possible it's a false positive, SCU != SCUS. Still, I thought I'd mention it.

It turned out DatasheetArchive had these too, just with a different prefix (Hughes H0488 vs. HLCD0488, Hughes H0541 vs. HLCD0541)

Ah, Mattel Computer Gin(NEC UCOM4 MCU, ref: http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/Gin.htm ) has one of those too, a HLCD0569.
