Are things like serial port and SCSI already hooked up? I guess the UART they used is pretty standard (8250?).

But what about Ethernet/SCSI, does the Sun2 support anything that's already supported by MAME (at least chip-wise, I know that the Multibus card itself probably doesn't exist yet)

On a related note, how would I go about running MAME with a machine (like a Sun2 or Sun3) and attach an emulated terminal to its serial port? I searched around a bit but couldn't find a suitable command line for such a configuration.

Sun2 is super preliminary, it has no I/O other than the BW2 video. The sun3_80 driver has serial ports that you should be able to type into, but the Z8530 chip emulation in MAME is still very WIP (Edstrom's been working on it). You can see serial ports in drivers that have them with -listslots.

"mame64 sun3_80 -rs232a terminal" will connect MESS's generic (not emulated) terminal to port A on the Sun 3/80; you *should* be able to type and have it appear on the Sun's screen, but I couldn't find a baud rate that worked which suggests the 8530 isn't totally fine yet.

"mame <machine> -<rs232 slot> null_modem -bitbngr socket.127.0.0.1:4321" then connect with a telnet client.

You could also use terminal rather than null_modem but if the machine has it's own input then keystrokes will go to both which makes it a bit unusable.

Edit: beaten

sun 2 scsi was discrete. sun 3 uses a ncr 5380

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sun_2-50_RAM-SCSI.JPG
is a picture of the memory expansion and sun2 vme scsi. note that it had a rtc on it.
2/50 cpu
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sun_2-50_Processor.JPG

there was a sun 3 made up of 6u vme cards (the 3E)
ebay 222132890021 has pictures of the ethernet/scsi card
which uses an intel ethernet and 5380 scsi like the 3/160

more pics here
http://sunstuff.org/hardware/systems/sun3/sun3/3-E/

3/60 switched to AMD LANCE for ethernet. earlier machines all used intel

sun 2 ethernet was originally a 3com 3c400 then their own intel 82586 board

sun 2 scsi connected to an adaptec 4000 mfm controller or a sysgen qic02 tape controller. i think later proms could boot from a sun3 scsi 'shoebox'

there was also a hideously dumb multibus qic02 controller

for 9 track and smd, most sun2 systems and early sun3s used xylogics 47x multibus cards (in vme-multibus adapters on sun3)

i wonder if a HLE scsi framework makes sense for all of the tape and disks where you could describe what parts of the common command set and the unique identifiers could be described, with a mechanism to talk to a physical disk or tape drive. I was thinking of this for the 440x simulation as well

If you point me to the rom and branch I can take a look at the z8530. I just recently updated it but it is not complete yet.

The current release or current GIT will work as far as the 3/80, I did that work a long time ago. Could someone hook him up with the sun3_80.zip in PM please? (I'm at work so I can't right now).

Ok, fixed! It is really good to have more software running through your driver. Will submit patch shortly, will just do some regression testing.

Who made the Kanji ROM for the ibmpcjx driver (MAME/MESS)?
Why the boxes for the color palette are so small?

ibmpcjx driver

The current KANJI.ROM use incorrect 8x8 size fonts too.
Try to run the "WIDTH 40,25" command in BASIC to see what I mean.

Anna, could I maybe convince you to register on Imgur (http://www.imgur.com/) for any future uploads?

The image uploader that you're using embeds links to their own website in the UBBthreads code that it generates. I find that very scummy and distasteful for an image host to do.

Imgur, by contrast, allows you to easily upload images simply by dragging them into your browser window, or even copy/pasting images into the browser window, and it allows you to directly hotlink to images, thus avoiding this sort of situation.

There's typically no good reason not to use Imgur, and I'm trying to get as many people as possible to switch to it, so that we can all move forward into an Internet future without image hosts that try to take advantage of the people who want or need to upload images.
