It's interesting because it has the first TMS-1000 rev E that I've seen; all the others have been rev B. I electronically dumped the lower 7 bits just like a rev B, although I thought there was a problem because 1/2 the ROM read 00. Turns out that they only needed 512 bytes. The TMS-17x0 must not have been in production yet.

Monkey See #1 uses the same Natl Semi chip as the Quiz Kid "Owl": MM5780. I've decapped one of those and it is very similar to their calculator chip MM5737. I was hoping it would be a slight modification of their MM5799 microcontroller, but it doesn't look like it.

I got Bandai Autorennen, which is like Mattel Auto Race. It has a Hitachi chip, HD38134. That makes the 4th of these I've seen:

Can you decap one to see if it's MCU or custom?

I'll look and see if I've decapped one yet. I sent Armor Battle to Kevin to see if it could be dumped similarly to HD38750/HD38800, but I don't think he had any luck.

I'm assuming they are MCUs, likely in the HMCS40 family, but the only 2 28-pin parts that I've found have a different pinout: HMCS42/HD38702 and HMCS43S/HD38757.

http://project-megs.blogspot.com/ also shows Tandy Space Shot with HD38138S (S might mean SDIP). And it shows Parker Bros Wild Fire with a TMS1400! I picked up another one recently and it has an AMI S2152 like the first one I got. The first one didn't work and I wasn't able to dump it, but this one works so I'll try to dump it again.

Edit: I had decapped the Sub Chase HD38132 and it is an MCU, but I can't discern 1s and 0s in the ROM. I'll whink it and see if that helps. If not, it's likely implant ROM and I probably won't be able to read it visually. I had also decapped the HD38800 from Kingman, and I can't see those ROM bits, either.

The only text on the Sub Chase die is TD38132.

Also, the S in HD38138S probably doesn't mean SDIP; my Tandy Golf is actually HD38135S and is DIP.

MP0271 is the ROM ID, so they are identical. I think NL indicates plastic package and standard temperature range, but I'm not sure what the 2nd L is for.
I'm not sure about the "MSL" code. There are many other codes, but MSL is the most common that I've seen.

On Monkey See, the part of the case where the red and green LEDs are located is clear plastic with a sticker, almost like they were going to include a numeric display.

The 3 TMS1000 handhelds you decapped are emulated and playable in MAME now. I'm not sure about the Brain Buggy MCU clock frequency, could you double check the RC values? If 2 "TDU" steps is 1 second (according to the manual), MCU speed should be around 100KHz or even less.

Regarding Sub Chase HD38132 vs HD38800 from Kingman, do they look much alike to assume it's the same (HMCS40) family?

I confirmed Brain Buggy is 47pF and 47K ohm. Unfortunately I didn't measure any timing before I decapped the chip. But I just tried using a jumper wire to control the drive motor, and it only ran for as long as I connected it, so I don't think the circuitry extends the drive signal.

The 2 Hitachi dies don't look all that similar, and I don't have any other versions to compare to- I'd like to see the HMCS42 and HMCS43S dies. The datasheets for all the HMCS40 chips show test pins, but the procedures could be different for different versions.
