Read mode does not change the display, but init blank acts the same as init visible. I'm guessing the read circuitry is still on the chip but the data out pin isn't bonded out. I don't know why init blank doesn't work.

I set segments in row 0, then just raised /CS after the row and mode data for rows 1 and 2, and rows 1 and 2 were blanked. It looks like the shift register is auto cleared.

Underclocking turns off the segments that were on previously but were not changed this time. Also explained if the shift register is auto cleared.

Is it in read or in write mode after init display?
HLCD doc says:
00: write mode
01: read mode
10: blank display, write mode
11: vis. display, read mode

I included the 24 segment bits after 10 and 11 inits. With the 10 init, the row 2 segments reflected the segment bits that I sent, and row 0 and row 1 segments were left as-is. The 11 init did not change anything.

I got Fonas 2-Player Baseball: TMS1000NLL MP0154 MSL 7940 SINGAPORE.

Ok got it, thanks for testing =)
It doesn't affect horseran emulation from a user pov, but that was expected.

Wow some bits were almost corroded away by the acid, but I was able to verify the ROM with the top metal pic.

Is the piezo sitting between R9 and R10?

Here's a summary of handheld changes in MAME 0.182 released today at http://mamedev.org/

New games:
- Conic Electronic Basketball [hap, Sean Riddle]
- Conic Multisport/Tandy Sports Arena [hap, Sean Riddle]
- Gakken Galaxy Invader 1000/Tandy Cosmic 1000 Fire Away [hap, Sean Riddle, Kevin Horton]
- Mattel Dalla$ (J.R. handheld) [hap, Sean Riddle]
- Mattel Thoroughbred Horse Race Analyzer [hap, Sean Riddle]
- Tiger 7 in 1 Sports Stadium [hap, Sean Riddle]

Other improvements were Entex Space Invader getting proper internal artwork. And important bugfixes to Comp IV, Electronic Detective, Codename Sector. The latter 2 were never playable at all, blame me for not playtesting them much (they're very complex games).

Yeah, the Whink was much more active on this one than on others. I always use the same temperature and duration, and this is from the same bottle, so I assume it had something to do with the die itself (thinner passivation layer?). I did electronically dump the lower 7 bits so I'm sure those are OK.

Sorry, I meant to describe the piezo circuit better but forgot to. It looks like they ran out of R outputs, so they used transistors to AND R9 and R10 together. R9 goes to the base of a transistor whose collector goes to the piezo and emitter goes to the collector of a 2nd transistor. The 2nd transistor's base goes to R10 and emitter to ground. So both transistors have to be on to energize the piezo.

It's added to MAME and playable, I only need to finish the internal artwork. It's a shame I only have rectangles and ellipses to my disposal when 'drawing', the baseball field diamond will be a circle. :P

Drawing this took me much longer than I wanted frown The baseball field as a circle looked really bad, so I took a different approach: https://imgur.com/a/bnrtU

1 oddity: See the chance result leds on top? When you play the game, it is much rarer for it to pick one on the right side. Could be a bug (game, or emulator). Or maybe it only picks the right side for left-handed batters... as if a led handheld has a feature like that :P
