Oh I didn't know about the Joust + Stargate. They might've put the wrong name on Stargate. They might correct it later. Good time for someone grab that one before they change it or retired that one. smile

Yeah, supposedly 'Defender' is going to be released later in the summer. We aren't sure if there will be a true Defender ROM, if they will change the name to Stargate, or just leave it as-is (Stargate game, called Defender...)

It has an extra button (Smart Bomb), but there aren't enough buttons on Joust. So if you really want to make a Stargate, you have to swap the EEPROM into the Rampage game (which has an additional button) and then you get your Smart Bombs... smile Or just reflash the Rampage ROM if you have the means...

There was a comment over on MAMEWorld that someone had no idea how the LCDs and backgrounds were being scanned in things like Tiger games. Is there a "this is how we do it" post in this thread? Any photos of an LCD background on the scanner glass, that sort of thing? laugh

I've got this old, crappy pic: http://www.seanriddle.com/lcdsetup.jpg

That's a PCB with pads that match the connector on the LCD, and a hole cut in the middle to allow backlighting the panel. That way, there are no shadows from the segments on the background. The Analog Discovery is being used as a signal generator to power the segments with a square wave at 50Hz. I vary the voltage from around 1.5v to 2.25v depending on whether I'm taking a pic with all segments on, or turning them on one-by-one to ID the common/segment inputs that turn each one on. The Konami and Tiger game that use the SM510 have up to 132 segments that have to be IDed; the SM511 up to 136 and the SM512 up to 200.

In that pic, I was using my laptop screen as a polarized backlight. But now I'm using an LED light table and polarizing gels. I've got a digital SLR mounted on a camera stand to take pics.

The backgrounds are being scanned with a Canon scanner.

When I catch up with work I can take some better pics of the setup.

I assume you mean this thread? http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=374374
If it's specifically about the backgrounds, there's not much to it. The background inlays (cardboard or plastic sheet) can be scanned after taking the handheld apart. Sean sends me the scan and I make a MAME .lay file for it. I align the background to the LCD segments in inkscape, and then use a script I made to create .lay coordinates and size.

Hap also cleans up the pic of the LCD panel and uses potrace to vectorize it, then gives it back to me to insert the segment IDs.
