Really want to play some of these games, but I can't seem to figure out how to get a memory card. I know QMC2's 'Devices' is not working, at this time, so I suspect this has to be accomplished through MAME. However, the only info I've been able to find, is this:
//forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=88333 (5 years old)
and it's not floating my boat. Clueless me - this thread creates more questions, for me, than answers.

Is anyone willing to take a few moments, and walk me through some process of creating/using a psu memory card, for game saves?

I should mention that the error I am getting is: "Fatal error: Device Sony PSX Memory Card load failed: Unspecified error".
So I guess my more specific question is: exactly what file do I use (and where/how can I get it, or create it)?

tia...

I'm saying this from memory, but I think you just have to enter the file manager in the UI and select "Create new" or something similar, then type the new name and the file will appear in its folder.

Yeah, that should work, although it fails recently for floppy disks at least and nobody knows why.

Gentlemen: much thanks, for the replies!

ICEknight, I tried that, but I don't find 'memory card', in the list of file types. Should I be looking for some other file type? It was this post, which lead me to look at the file manager approach: xxxx://www.mameworld.info/net/emuadvice/mem.html (for Neo-Geo)

R. Belmont, I'm really having a heck of a time, with psx. I can't get MAME to do Playstation .cue files, either - though converting to chd works fine. I suspect this is also a 'pilot error' situation.

Perhaps I should mention that I use an increadably long MAME run string, because I run from the torrents, and do all configuration via QMC2:

K:\Games\Mame\mame64.exe -cheat -nodrc -artpath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs\artwork" -cheatpath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs" -hashpath "K:\Games\Mame\hash" -rompath "K:\Downloads\MAME ROMs;K:\Downloads\MAME Software List ROMs" -samplepath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs\samples;K:\Downloads\MAME Multimedia\soundtracks" -sound dsound -video d3d -output console -snapname "soft-lists/psx/spyro" psu -cdrm psx:spyro:cdrom

The above is an example of what I pass to MAME, when running from command line (copied from QMC2 log).

Ok, I have made some little progress. I found 'saveram' under 'nvram'. So now I have 2, 128k, saverams, maybe, and probably in the wrong place:

k:\Games\Mame\nvram\psu
psu.mc1
psu.mc2

And I have this, in my ini\presets folder: psu.ini:

#
# SLOT DEVICES
#
port1 digital_pad
port2 digital_pad

#
# IMAGE DEVICES
#
memcard1 psu.mc1
memcard2 psu.mc2
quickload
cdrom

But alas, memory cards still "not found".

What other dumb blunders might I be suffering from?

I did find something strange - MAME never looks in it's ini folder, for my ini file, but finds an autogenerated ini, in my system profile. Sorry, it's unreadable, with wrap, but I can't seem to find a file attach. or font size option option (didn't check the full editor):

</system>
</mameconfig>

Maybe it's not 'pilot error'?

Ok, I got it sorted. Pilot error, all the way. I didn't have paths, in my psu.ini file. And it looks like I should be putting my stuff, in my Windows profile, not in the Mame install folder. Maybe I should have rtfm?

Huge thanks, to both you folks, for giving me a helping hand! I didn't want to make a fool of myself, in the Mame sections...

And my saga continues. Mysteriously, it stopped working, again. Now, I have a freshly autogenerated cfg folder in my Windows\System32 folder, with a fresh psu.ini and default.ini. This gets accessed, but not the ones in Mame\ini\presets, or Users\MusicLovr.

confused
I think I'll go to bed!

Still looks the same, in the light of day - modify a default Mame ini file, and Mame rewrites defaults, to new location, and uses that. I theorize this is the cause of QMC2's Devices tool problems (not a QMC2 issue), and perhaps Just Desert's PS2 device problem (noticed in Shout Box)?

Good stuff: h--ps://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon

Been using it for over 15 years.

Take care...

What the heck, I might as well throw in another 2 cents worth (that's about what it's worth). I've been using Mame since 2006, but have never learned it. I've always used a front end, and done as much configuration, with it, as possible. I should rtfm!

Anyway, I seem to see 2 problems. Oh, and naturally, Mame only creates a cfg file, in System32, if run from elevate console. But it tries many restricted places.

Anyway prob #1: The scheme, for locating a Users secondary cfg folder (if that's what it is), just doesn't work. René did it ok. He has qmc2\stuff. He also used a '.' to make him come to the top. And he hard coded the location, with a command line switch, to use other location (for multi config or portable). A configuration setting would also work. If he finds qmc2\something, it's his stuff. I have cfg folders, all over my drives. Using the first one stumbled across, is just wrong. And creating one, where you can, also seems wrong. Ideally, to be compliant, with M$ guidelines, the more proper place would be C:\Users\MUSICL~1\AppData\Local\Mame\cfg, [nvram, quickload, defaults, whatever].

Another possibility is that some idiots just don't install stuff, on c:. If Mame is simply trying to identify the install drive\path, a system("cd") command should do nicely, for Win. Is Mame up to installs to other drives? And are we supposed to use Mame's install folders/files, or something in our profile)? That's a rhetorical question - sb in the dox.pdf

#2: maybe it's the code which should strip comments and invalid tags? It seems to be deciding that if the initially generated .ini files have been altered, in any way, it's the wrong folder, and Mame goes off and creates one, somewhere.

I played some more. I deleted the psu.ini, from your install folder, and deleted the one in System32 (elevated only). I ran mame, with the above string, and Mame decided my qmc2\cfg folder was it's, and wrote default psu.ini and defaults.ini, there. I deleted those, and it again created a cfg folder and ini files, in System32. It seems it will not look for cfg in my user proflile, now, as it originally did. And yes, whatever one it is actually using, at present (from Procmon) - if edited, with correct paths to saverams placed in psu.ini, it works once, but creates a new cfg folder, elsewhere, and fails on the next run.

Both these issues may still be the result of my not having any idea what I'm doing, but at the very least, Mame is not idiot-proof, in this area wink

Procmon, with these filters, might be good (file filtering):
process name contains mame include
process name contains qt include (didn't trigger, in this case)
path contains (my case - psu.ini - maybe ps2.ini, for JD?)

and a highlight filter of:
result contains SUCC include

And oh - btw, if your not familiar with Procmon, it also captures Network activity, but not traffic (don't think that is on it's main page).

I've done about as much damage, as I can, or made a huge fool of myself.

Thanks for many years of fine emulation, and hopefully, many more years to come!

Forget everything which went before. Consider my previous posts to be the ravings of a maniac. I've finally pinned-down the real problem, with memcards, and QMC2, and idiot users, and Mame. It's all of our faults, and it hinges around the current drive\folder, when Mame is executed.

Mame ini files work perfectly, IF Mame is started from the Mame install folder. However, if started from a different drive or folder, all the crazy stuff (from my previous posts), may and does occur. QMC2 runs Mame from the QMC2 install folder. This does not work. Nor does running Mame from anywhere else - the ini files are not found.

In other words - this works, if Mame is executed from command line, from the Mame install folder (file: ini\presets\psu.ini):

#
# SLOT DEVICES
#
port1 digital_pad
port2 digital_pad

#
# IMAGE DEVICES
#
memcard1 K:\Games\Mame\nvram\psu\psu.mc1
memcard2 K:\Games\Mame\nvram\psu\psu.mc2
quickload
cdrom

However, if Mame is started from another location (like QMC2 install folder, or user profile, or root folder, or another drive, etc.), this file is not found (and will probably be created, somewhere, depending on the current, non-Mame drive\path).

I think Mame used to function correctly, if launched from another location. I think this changed 6 or so months ago, when QMC2's Devices tool stopped working.

Anyway, I can save games, if I launch Mame from command line, from it's own folder, but not when launched by QMC2.

So, is this something the FE folks must deal with (like CDing to Mame install, before launching Mame), or is this something the Mame team could tweak (making Mame understand it's own install path and folder locations, when launched from another location)?

(getting old sucks - some days the neurons fire, and some days they don't...)
