MAME on Windows has always searched for ini files relative to its working directory (its a bit more complex on other operating systems). This hasn't changed. If no inipath is supplied on the command line, it will always do that. Can you configure the inipath option in qmc2?

Ok, much thanks! Then my issue is perhaps not related to QMC2's Devices tab problems, beginning 6 (or so) months back. Or maybe it still is? haha.

Current ini setting is: .;ini;ini/presets
However , no -inipath switch is passed, by QMC2's Mame run string:

K:\Games\Mame\mame64.exe -cheat -nodrc -artpath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs\artwork" -cheatpath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs" -hashpath "K:\Games\Mame\hash" -rompath "K:\Downloads\MAME ROMs;K:\Downloads\MAME Software List ROMs" -samplepath "K:\Downloads\MAME EXTRAs\samples;K:\Downloads\MAME Multimedia\soundtracks" -sound dsound -video d3d -output console -snapname "soft-lists/psx/spyro" psu -cdrm psx:spyro:cdrom

Indeed, adding an -inipath K:\games\mame\ini\presets
works fine, from anywhere. (/me mutters to self: rtfm, rtfm,...)

So it looks like I'll need Rene, to 'fix' this issue. I've been meaning to ask him to add a custom user command line string, to cover any other or new Mame switch he does not support. Here's the perfect example.

I'll file a bug report/request, on the bug tracker. Maybe Rene can be coaxed back, for a likely minor tweak.

So let's call it a heavy dose of pilot error, and a QMC2 oversight/omission. Mame ain't broke, in this regard wink

Thanks again, Vas Crabb, ICEknight, and R. Belmont!

Vas Crabb: now that you've cleared my mental fog, a workaround is obvious - place a copy of Mame\ini folder into Qmc2, where Mame can find it, when launched from Qmc2 folder wink

Thx, again...
