Hi there, thanks for helping me out with the Professor-Pacman thing.

Now I've got a question that has been bothering me ever since I first started using MAME. Pressing F4 will load up the graphics data for like the palettes, background tiles, foreground objects & characters right? Some games support it, others don't.

And why is that?

Is it how certain games are dumped, or are those things coded by people and it's possible to write some for games that don't have it?

It only works for games where the graphics are stored and drawn as tiles, and where the driver uses MAME's centralized routines to handle them. A lot of games either don't use tiles at all (Mortal Kombat) or use them in a more complex manner than the central routines can reasonably deal with (Saturn).

Could it be the reason behind those vertical gaps that appear on the backgrounds in Pit-Fighter when the camera is zooming in/out? Pit-Fighter is heavily based on tiled graphics and maybe the driver is not rendering those tiles properly. Just a guess here...

No, it's a flaw in the scaling algorithm.

Thank you for the reply RB. Do you know if this flaw is present in the real PCB too or this flawed algorithm is on MAME side only (emulation bug)?

I wonder if there's an active MAME developer who could get rid of this glitch or if Aaron was the only guy with enough Atari knowledge to do such thing...

Why are you suddenly so obsessed with this issue that you're cross-posting about it on multiple forums, and dragging someone else's thread off-topic about it, no less?

Sorry Just, it was not my intention, but since I thought the subject of this post was related to the issue, I thought I could find some answers about it here. And because nobody answered my post on MAME Chat forum.

Pit-Fighter is my favorite game and I want it "perfectly" emulated, if possible. And since I play this game a lot, It kinda bothers me. That's why I'm looking for clues over this bug. That's it.

It's not really related, though.

I would like to apologize for bumping this thread but I felt it was important and I didn't want to bother making a new thread for something relating to the graphics viewer.

This one game called Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun (and Renegade has this issue too) is a game I'm trying to sprite rip. I need to look in the graphics viewer because most of the time the enemy sprites collide with the player and that hinders me from making accurate rips, so I tried to use the tile viewer

Except this happened

[Linked Image]

The black outlines collided with the black background on the tile viewer. This sounds like a bit of a stretch but is it possible to change the color of the default "background" on the tile viewer?

Sprite ripping is basically copyright infringement, and I'm not too keen on adding a feature specifically for assisting with it. The graphics viewer is really designed as a development aid. If you want to rip graphics, you're better off doing it from ROM anyway.
