Great work! I had some fun tonight and started looking at a Gakken game, Runaway. It has an MCU that looks like this: ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/PfDbgzE.png) It seems similar to the SM5x ones used in the G&W games but the pinout doesn't seem to match when tracing the PCB lines. Can someone here identify the MCU type? It would be nice to add this game to MAME Cheers!

Until it gets decapped it's gonna be hard to tell. It could be literally anything remarked as a Gakken part.

yeah for rebadged parts the best you can do short of decap is figure out the pinout and see if it matches anything known...

Didn’t the Gakken TV boy have a similar problem regarding “rebranded components”?

Tandy Hold Up has an identical-looking chip, but labeled with Hitachi's crosshairs logo and "43380 A11LR". Quick Reference Guide to Integrated Circuits And Discrete Semiconductor Devices 1984 has a blurb on HD43380: 4-bit processor, low power consumption, built-in LCD driver, built-in timepiece, 480x26-bit ROM, 48x6-bit RAM, 3x27 segment LCD driver, 3V, 183uS cycle time, 30uW power consumption. I haven't found any more details, and no Hitachi chip that I've ever decapped has had visible bits, so I haven't decapped it.
Here are some of the pins to compare to Runaway's chip: 1=ACL, 59&60 are battery -, 57&58 are crystal, 56 is battery +, 18 to piezo.

Thanks! The specs on that chip should match what's required for this game. I will compare the pins tonight and see if they match those pins. However, it doesn't sound too easy to dump (and then emulate) this MCU yet so I will see whether I can get the display segments to work and in that case digitise and and ID the segments and then put this game in the growing heap of games that I'll eventually donate to you Sean The display might be a bit harder to digitize than the G&W displays as well since the overlay is actually printed on the glass display instead of being placed as separate plastic cards in between the display and filter.

I must say that adding quality artwork to the games really makes a difference! hydef, do you have any plans on doing any other VFD or LED based games? There are several of those that could definitely use some nice art added.

Cheers, ssj. I agree, art for VFD games totally transforms them. I'm hoping someone can find video settings to make them look more realistic.
I've got the 2 other Invader games so will try to get those done at least, but solid plans for other VFD games, no. It's not because I don't want to, it's due to a lack of resources and my own confidence in the result.
Other LCD games, yes. The G&W, Konami, Tiger games all use a template so it's possible to make other games by modifying them or when I get art for them. I've got some to work on thanks to a contributor who supplied a few Konami and Tiger scans. Problem is, sometimes I can't get started on anything because I find it a little daunting to get stuck into some of the more complex ones. I've also got a Russian Elektronika template that's been sitting there for a while, but I somehow can't decide on it being finished.

Sean, the MCU on the Gakken game seems to have other pins than the HD43380. Let me know if you are interested in looking at a picture of the PCB, otherwise I'll send it to you with what else I have here.
