With mame 0.215 running on macOS Catalina, I found some games crashing with auto or bgfx.

For example ./mame64 cvsgd -video bgfx
zsh: segmentation fault ./mame64 cvsgd -video bgfx

However, ./mame64 cvsgd -video bgfx -bgfx_backend metal
works without crashing.

Is there a way to change the mame.ini to default to the backend metal for Macs? It seems a lot faster!

The INI for OSD VIDEO OPTIONS for video only allows soft, bgfx, or OpenGL

I am using SDL2 2.0.10 from Oct 2, 2019

Thanks!

You mighy need to refresh your ini, bgfx_backend can be put in mame.ini too.

Ah I found the INI options under the BGFX POST-PROCESSING OPTIONS section. Thanks!

Having lots of crashes with bgfx, finding most games are unplayable with 0.215. Also OpenGL takes up ΒΌ of my retina display, so software is the only option.

Going back to 0.214 works fine. Hope these issues get fixed for the next version!

Did you overwrite the bgfx/ directory with the new one? That is vitally important for 0.215.

Yes I did. I always compile in a source folder, then move the compiled mame64 binary, the bgfx folder, and the contents of the artwork folder.

Anyone else on macOS crashing using bgfx with mame 0.215?

Are you using hlsl screen chain by any chance? I am seeing lots of crashes when using hlsl when either passing it as -bgfx_screen_chains parameter or having it configured in the ini.

I have bgfx_screen_chains set to default. I have also tried setting it to unfiltered.

Crashes either way on game start.

What happens if you set it to none? This will mess up the colours for any game which does not output rgb32 but would give some indication as to the culprit of the crashes.

I set chains to none and it still crashes loading pretty much any game.
