I think when Radio Shack did that it was left over inventory from an existing game. That looks to be an alternate version of Maniac from Ideal: https://www.handheldmuseum.com/Misc/IdealManiac.htmI've seen pictures of a different board from Maniac, but everything about this one lines up. It looks like they intended for you to actually push the circuit board down to trigger the buttons, and maybe they realized that was a bad idea and redesigned the board a little... Maybe that's why these were dumped. ( And also it appears that the buttons where meant to light up (and maybe they do on some games, not sure, never really played this one)). Or maybe the newer revision was just cutting costs. There's some YT videos, you can confirm the game play maybe. They also did it with the guts of Simon, I remember seeing stacks of Simon boards in some electronics wholesale places (never knew Radio Shack did this though... )

Maniac is much older than this game.
around the two 7segs are 8 leds in a circle, and a button for each led. It's for 1-5 players (take turns), there are 5 minigames. Games 1 and 2, probably meant to play with a dice. Game 3: press button opposite of the lighted led. Game 4/5: press button when led turns on. You get points for each button press, and it's easy to 'overflow' the score here by pressing the same button multiple times fast. This eventually locks up the program. Bad bug.
I'm voting for canceled product.

Well, the chip on this is dated 1980, and Maniac came out in 79 (or was announced in 79), so it's the right time frame... Are there actually 8 buttons? I just assumed two conacts for one button, and the LEDs would have lit up the white 'Maniac' buttons on the game... Maybe they were working on a sequel to Maniac, or some company just trying to do a knockoff.. Almost seems too similar to be a complete coincidence... I did notice that the numeric LED isn't a perfect 45 degree angle like a Maniac board would be... Can't recall any other game with a big two-digit readout in the middle. If it was released, it might have been part of a board game or some other toy as well...

Yeah, it's 8 buttons. I imagine they'd be over the leds and some kind of pivot mechanism presses the leaf switch that's underneath the pcb. I think the 7segs won't be angled when you have the toy in front of you. In other words, pcb itself would sit rotated inside the toy. A lot of these old games have aged badly, so I can't say they canceled it because the game isn't fun. But the lock-up bug I mentioned is a good reason to cancel it. The closest resemblence I found was this: https://www.handheldmuseum.com/Shinsei/DoremifaTouch.htm

Ahh, forgot about the odd Japanese games.. Although this board was assembled in Mexico... Not that that proves anything. That's a good find though, I'll see if I know anyone that has it and is willing to open it, or post a video of game play...

Resembles, but not the exact same game. The led angles don't match. And the switch under the 7segs, that would show up on the pcb too.

Oh, haha, yeah, I see what you mean about the LEDs... The switch wouldn't necessarily have to be on the PCB, it could just be a wired switch screwed to the case... (I was thinking that with Maniac too...) But, damn, that is soooo close... Do you have a higher-resolution photo of the back of the board? I could only find one for the front... It looks like there might be some writing on it, but not sure if it would be helpful... And does it really seem to be playing games? I actually found a patent for a PIC 1655a controlled child's oven with sound effects and lights for the 'burners'... Didn't have a numeric display though, but you never what kind of weird toy this might have been designed for...

yeah I thought it might be a "maniac 2" type game; that was the closest thing to it I could think of.
rik: re: more games, yeah I can dump more microcontrollers probably, it isn't too bad. what games did you have in mind?

Well I just tried out the HD38800 dumper again with the galaxian micro and got the same data, so I guess it still works. lol. I will redump space invader 2 here and see if I get some different results than last time.
