Regarding the AIC, how does the system determine if one is hooked up versus if one isn't? I'm guessing the system software probes the shared memory area, but it would be nice to have confirmation.

There's no hardware interlock, so I'd say your guess is as good as any. To know for sure i'd have to ask the engineer who wrote the firmware.

You're probably comparing a stripped release build with a full debug build. It's a common mistake. But it's also worth noting that the size on disk of an executable doesn't predict either the runtime RAM usage or the execution speed.



The requirement is listed in red letters and a large font when you try to register. For some reason, people miss it all the time anyway. We might have to make the instructions spoken or something.

Only if the debug build is the default, which would be unexpected.

I believe the AIC cards are simply latched over the address bus, that would mean, if the card is not present they simply won't answer and there will be no mem or irq responses from them.

If I remember rightly, you don't even need a AIC (CMI-07 the Analog IO card) card to run the system. I never had one in my system.

To be fair, the text is neither red nor large. It might have been like that in the past, but right now it's just regular-sized black text. The text looks like a standard shrinkwrap EULA, and with nobody reading these ever anyway, I think it's understandable that people miss it ...

It definitely was large and red at one point, we used to post screenshots with it circled.
