I was able to boot damn small linux with the at586 driver using plop boot manager to boot the cdrom. For some reason, once x launches the keyboard doesn't work. However, you can still play mouse games like FreeCell and Taipei.

./mame at586 -cdrom dsl-4.4.10-syslinux.iso -ramsize 256M -flop1 plpbt.img

AFAIK, at586 is a bit of a deadend driver, as it uses the legacy PCI subsystem. There's the drivers in pcipc.cpp though they're somewhat unstable, but they use the newer PCI subsystem.

When Kale's SiS630 goes in that will be a decent modern-ish PC driver for this kind of fun. No harm in seeing what the old code can do though.
