A little offtopic:
I saw the CVS commit wfp did to SMS driver, to cleanup and fix regressions. Since I don't have a working setup to compile MESS, I need to wait for next binary release to test the changes. I looked at bug reports for SMS emulation. Bugs filed by Justin (764, 765 and 766) and one about broken Game Gear emulation (705) will need confirmation. On this occasion, I would like to ask someone to take a look at bug 261, about missing emulation of the Pause button. There is a patch attached made to solve the problem, but nobody has applied. I can't test to see if it fixes the problem, but seems simple for a developer test. The Pause function is important for playability because some games use this function to show itens and options, by example.
Thanks in advance.

765 & 766 are fixed, 764 is partly fixed, 705 isn't fixed.

Should I go ahead and credit Judge with #765 and #766 in messnew.txt?

I would credit him with them, sure. His has been the only change to the driver since I filed the bugs the other day, and they've existed for ages.
Also, gamegear is currently set up as compatible with sms--is this really the case? I know they have the same hardware except for the screen resolution, but can binaries for one run on the other? I can't really test now since gamegear is broken, but as it is now it won't even accept .sms files as input unless you manually attach them.

I think it was possible to run SMS games on the Game Gear with an adaptor, but not vice-versa (the GG VDP has one more mode than the SMS's).

What is the behaviour on a real console when booting a console with a smsu13 or smse13 bios and a cartridge inserted?
Does the cartridge boot immediately, or does first part of the bios boot?

It looks like the bioses mentioned in smsu13 and smse13 are actually hacked roms, hardcoded to always jump into the maze game.
The bioses for these systems only differ 3 bytes with the BIOS mentioned in smsu13h and smse13h.
In the maze game versions those 3 bytes contain a jump instruction, in the other (real) version there is a call there to routine which checks for the presence for a cartridge.
In other words, it looks like the smsu13 and smse13 actually use hacked bios roms and the smsu13h and smse13h drivers use real bios roms.
All other bioses boot fine using with and without a cartridge.

If they are hacked BIOSes, purge that filth from MESS. I've always been slightly suspicious of the sheer amound of SMS systems...

Hmm, that doesn't leave any sets with the maze game though, smsu13h and smse13h just give you a screen with instructions on inserting a cartridge. There must have been some set that booted into that game, maybe it's not dumped?
